KANEOHE, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University swept Tuesday's PacWest Conference doubleheader against Holy Names 4-2 and 4-1 at Howard Okita Field.
The Sharks (11-9, 5-3) took an early lead over the Hawks (4-25, 2-16) in the opening game, then came from behind to the victory in game two.
The Sharks got two strong pitching performances in the wins, as freshman
Taylor Thompson of Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle (7-5) collected her third straight win in the first game, hurling a complete game with two runs on five hits with three strikeouts. In the second game, senior
Malia Torres of Danville, Calif./Monte Vista (4-5) chalked up another complete contest, allowing a run on eight hits with two strikeouts.
At the plate, freshman
Jewel Larson of Waipahu, Hawai'i/Pearl City went 3-for-5 on the day with a double, an RBI and two runs scored. Junior
Brandi Leong of Wahiawa, Hawai'i/Leilehua was 3-for-7 with a run scored as well.
The Sharks got the opening game off right with two runs in the first inning on an RBI double from junior Noel "Tita" Saunders of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Pearl City and an RBI single from Larson. HPU added a two RBI double from sophomore
Hoku Ching of Honolulu/Roosevelt in the third for a 4-0 lead.
Thompson's 20-inning scoreless streak came to an end in the Holy Names sixth as the Hawks got a two run homer from Aly Cerda down the left field line that cut the lead to 4-2. The Sharks defense stepped up to snuff out the threat in both the sixth and seventh for the win.
HNU starter Dezirae Simon (2-6) suffered the loss by allowing the two runs in the first inning.
HNU grabbed a quick lead in game two, after a leadoff single and two ground outs set up a wild pitch that scored a run as the Hawks led 1-0.
HPU answered the run with as Saunders reached on an error and advanced to second, then was driven in with an RBI single from freshman
Neva Poulin of Corona, Calif./Norco.
The score stayed knotted at 1-1 until the Sharks jumped on HNU reliever Carly Hillenbrand in the sixth. Following a Larson double and a walk, sophomore pinch hitter
Poliahu Aina of Kailua, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama delivered a two RBI triple down the right field line. Torres followed with a RBI single to put HPU up 4-1.
The Sharks got a double play in the top of the seventh and Torres got strikeout to end the game.
Hillenbrand (0-1) took the loss in relief.
The Sharks and Hawks conclude their series on Wednesday with a doubleheader at Howard Okita Field, starting at 1 p.m.
