DALY CITY, Calif. – The No. 7 Hawai'i Pacific University women finished the northern California portion of their mainland roadtrip, taking down Academy of Art 6-1 on Thursday at Bay Club South San Francisco.
The seventh ranked Sharks (7-3) won the doubles point over the Urban Knights (5-3) and claimed five of the six singles positions.
HPU's took No. 2 doubles pair of
Elodie Busson and
Mihoki Miyahara defeated Maria Casucci and Paulina Alvarez 6-1, then got the win from the No. 3 team of
Valentina Mokrova and
Marta Ruszczynska with a 6-4 triumph against Julia Ortega and Viktoria Leth. The Sharks were on the brink of a sweep with their No. 1 duo of
Shaline Pipa and
Marleen Tilgner holding a 6-5 lead on ARTU's 13th ranked pair of Sofia Ragona and Yun "Nicole" Shiau.
Then the Sharks all but swept the singles action from the Urban Knights, starting at No. 3 with Tilgner dropping Casucci 6-0, 6-2.
The feature position at No. 1 between 16th ranked Pipa and ninth ranked Ragona didn't go that long, as Pipa stunned Ragona 6-4, 6-0. The Sharks clinched the win at No. 2, as Busson took out 45th ranked Shiau 6-2, 6-2. HPU added points at No. 5 with Ruszczynska beating Leth 6-4, 6-2, and at No. 4 as Miyahara besting Ortega 6-3, 6-2. The lone ARTU point was at No. 6 where Alvarez beat
Rikona Murakami 7-5, 6-1.
The Sharks travel to southern California to face the No. 21 Women of Troy at USC on Saturday. The match starts at 2 p.m. HST (4 p.m. PST) at the Marks Tennis Stadium. A live stream of all six courts is provided by USC.
