LOS ANGELES – The No. 7 Hawai'i Pacific University women got a taste of Power 5 action on Saturday as No. 21 (Division I) USC defeated HPU 4-0 at Marks Tennis Stadium.
The Sharks (7-4) were in close action in the points not settled, while the Women of Troy (10-7) swept the scoring positions.
In doubles, HPU's No. 1 tandem of
Shaline Pipa and
Marleen Tilgner were beaten by USC's Eryn Cayetano and Danielle Willson 6-4, with
Valentina Mokrova and
Marta Ruszczynska falling to Leyden Games and Isabelle Lee 6-0. The No. 2 position was tight, with
Elodie Busson and Mihokyi Miyahara down a game to Sloane Morra and Salma Ewing 6-5 when the point was won.
In singles, the Women of Troy won at No. 2 with sixth ranked Cayetano downing Busson 6-3, 6-2, at No. 3 with 60th ranked Snow Han defeating Tilgner 6-2, 6-0, and at No. 5 where McKenna Koening beat Mokrova 6-4, 6-2.
In the unfinished positions, 16th ranked Pipa was leading ninth ranked Ewing 4-2 in the second set after losing the opening set 6-4 at No. 1. The No. 4 spot had Miyahara up 4-3 in the second on Willson who won the first set 6-1, and the No. 6 saw Ruszczynska tied at 4-4 in the second with Lee who took the first 6-1.
The Sharks return to Division II play on Sunday when they take on Washburn (Kan.) at 7 a.m. HST (10 a.m. PDT) at Azusa Pacific's Munson & Bavougian Tennis Center in Azusa, Calif.
