No. 6 HPU Returns To Court With Triumph Over Sea Lions

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The sixth ranked Hawai'i Pacific University men returned to competition for the first time in nearly a month and easily dispatched Point Loma 5-2 at the PLNU Tennis Courts on Thursday.
 
The No. 9 Sharks (5-0) took the doubles point from the Sea Lions (6-6) with a tiebreak win, then took the first four completed singles positions to win the match.
 
The teams split the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles spots, as Jakub Beran and Robin Sanz shutout David Strassburger and Lukas Schuster 6-0, but PLNU's Alejandro Castaneda and Alexander Leischner edged Benjamin Loccisano and Jan Heine 6-4. The deciding No. 1 spot was won by HPU's Jordi Walder and Jan Pleva 7-6 against Tyler Davis and Nabeel Khan, taking the tiebreaker 7-4.
 
The Sharks then took control of the match in singles play. First one in was at No. 4, where Beran beat Khan 6-3, 6-2, before Pleva beat Strassburger at No. 2 6-3, 6-3. The Sharks clinched the match at No. 5 with Loccisano beating Castaneda 6-3, 6-3. HPU got its final point in the feature match at No. 1 where eighth ranked Walder needed three sets to defeat 36th ranked Davis 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 to go up 5-0.
 
The Sea Lions got their points at No. 3 where Leischner downed 60th ranked Sanz 6-2, 7-5, and at No. 6 with Jasdeep Paintal winning over Heine 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.
 
HPU is in action again on Friday, when the take on Holy Names in a neutral site contest at UC San Diego's Northview Tennis Courts in LaJolla. The match is scheduled for 7 a.m. HST (9 a.m. PST).
