AZUSA, Calif. – The seventh ranked Hawai'i Pacific University women returned to Division II play and took down Washburn (Kan.) 4-2 at Azusa Pacific's Munson & Bavougian Tennis Complex.
The Sharks (8-4) won their eighth straight Division II match, while the Ichabods (4-6) dropped their fifth straight match.
Washburn stunned the Sharks by taking the doubles point before HPU claimed four of the five completed singles positions.
HPU grabbed the No. 1 doubles spot as
Shaline Pipa and
Marleen Tilgner beat Lara Schmid and Isabella Martensson 6-1, but the Ichabods claimed No. 2 with Maja Jung and Kinsey Fields bettering
Elodie Busson and
Mihoki Miyahara 6-3. The point was decided at No. 3 with Washburn's Marta Torres and Svea Crohn outlasting HPU's
Valentina Mokrova and
Marta Ruszczynska 7-5.
The Sharks overcame the point lost by scoring on the first three singles positions finishing. Ruszczynska shutout Issabella Pensavalle 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6, just before 16th ranked Pipa took No. 1 over Torres 6-3, 6-0. HPU made it 3-1 when Miyahara downed Jung 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4. The Bods got back in it at No. 2 as Martensson beat Busson in a third set tiebreaker 6-1, 2-6, 7-6. But Tilgner clinched it for the Sharks at No. 3, beating Schmid 6-4, 6-1. In the unfinished No. 5 spot, Mokrova was up 4-3 in the second against Crohn who won the first set 6-3 when the match was ended.
The Sharks have a key match on Monday when they visit the Biola Tennis Center to face No. 11 Biola at 9 a.m. HST (Noon PDT).
