LA MIRADA, Calif. – The seventh ranked Hawai'i Pacific University women lost to a Division II team for the first time this season as No. 11 Biola stunned HPU 5-2 on Monday at the Biola Tennis Center.
The Sharks (8-5) had won eight consecutive Division II events, the Eagles (14-1) avenged their only loss of the season to HPU in February.
The Sharks played without their top two players, freshman
Shaline Pipa and senior
Elodie Busson who were held out due because of medical reasons.
Despite missing the duo and changing two of the three doubles spots, HPU won the doubles point from the Eagles.
Valentina Mokrova and
Marta Ruszczynska played up a spot and won No. 2 over Alexandria Mann and Brooke Fager 6-4, but BU took the No. 3 spot with Ines Diaz and Gaby Carvajal beating
Olivia Kjaer and
Rikona Murakami 6-4. HPU played Marleen Tilger and
Mihoki Miyahara at No. 1 and the duo defeated 24th ranked Colbeyshae Emery and Mary Brascia 7-5 for the point.
Singles weren't as kind to the Sharks, missing the 16th ranked Pipa and HPU's No. 2 in Busson, forcing everyone to play up two positions.
Miyahara stepped up to win at No. 2, besting 46th ranked Brascia 1-6, 6-1, 6-4, but that would be HPU's only win. Tilgner, playing up at No. 1, battled valiantly against Emery but lost in a tiebreaker as Emery posted the 0-6, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) win.
Biola took No. 3 with Mann downing Mokrova 6-4, 6-3, won at No. 4 with Lilly McNeill bettering Ruszczynska 6-4, 6-2, took No. 5 as Fager beat Murakami 7-5, 6-4, and claimed No. 6 with Diaz beating Kjaer 6-3, 6-1.
The road doesn't get easier for the seventh ranked Sharks, as HPU returns to the Munson & Bavougian Tennis Complex to face No. 14 Azusa Pacific on its home court. Match time is slated for 7:30 a.m. HST (10:30 a.m. PDT).
