LA MIRADA, Calif. – The No. 6 Hawai'i Pacific University men rolled to their eighth straight win blanking No. 37 Biola 7-0 at the Biola Tennis Center on Monday afternoon.
The sixth ranked Sharks (8-0) lost only two sets in the match in sweeping away the Eagles (10-4).
The Sharks nearly made it a clean sweep in the doubles, as
Jakub Beran and
Robin Sanz won at No. 2 over Sebastian Herrera and Carlos Solorzano 6-4, then the No. 1 duo of
Jan Pleva and
Jordi Walder defeated Alexei Prokopchuk and Antonio Rosales Varona 6-4. In the unfinished No. 3 position,
Benjamin Loccisano and
Jan Heine were ahead of Isaac Cordova and Callen Hein 5-3 when the point was won.
HPU won the match quickly in singles with the lower positions coming in first. The Sharks 60th ranked Sanz shutout Varona at No. 3 6-0, 6-0, followed by Loccisano at No. 5 taking down Cordova 6-3, 6-2, and Beran bettering Alex Sedeno 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5 for the match.
Even with the team match decided, the feature match between eighth ranked Walder and BU's 11th ranked Herrera was a classic, as the Sharks Walder won both sets in tiebreakers 7-6 (8-6) and 7-6 (9-7). Pleva went three sets at No. 2 to beat Prokopchuk 6-3, 5-7, 7-5, and
Ryohei Arai won in three at No. 6 beating Hein 6-3, 3-6, 10-7.
The Sharks continue on Tuesday by returning to the Munson & Bavougian Tennis Complex to face 16th ranked Azusa Pacific on the Cougars home surface. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m. HST (2 p.m. PDT).
