AZUSA, Calif. – The No. 6 Hawai'i Pacific University men made it nine straight in racking up a 6-1 win over 16th ranked Azusa Pacific at the Munson & Bavougian Tennis Complex on Tuesday.
The sixth ranked Sharks (9-0) lost only at No. 2 singles to the No. 16 Cougars (7-4) in beating APU for a second time this season.
HPU needed a tiebreaker at No. 2 as
Jakub Beran and
Robin Sanz beat Miha Velicki and Elias Emilio Walter 7-6 for the point after the Sharks top pair of
Jan Pleva and
Jordi Walder bettered Leyton Bohren and Ryan Nuno 6-4. The Cougars No. 3 pair of Ethan Smith and Sam Sippel started the doubles with a win over HPU's
Jan Heine and
Benjamin Loccisano 6-2.
The Sharks used the bottom of the lineup to set up the win. Heine won at No. 6 against Velicki 7-6, 6-3, and Loccisano picked up No. 5 over Ivan Noel Hornung 6-2, 6-3 to go up 3-0. The Cougars Sippel won No. 2 against Pleva 7-6, 6-4, then the Sharks got the win when 60th ranked Sanz beat Bohren 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 at No. 3.
The feature singles match at No. 1 pitted eighth ranked Walder against 20th ranked Nuno. Walder came through in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. The final point was at No. 4, with Beran outlasting 69th ranked Walter 6-7, 6-3, 7-5.
The No. 6 Sharks have a key national match to close their southern California trip, facing No. 4 Indianapolis at the Munson & Bavougian starting at 10 a.m. HST (1 p.m. PDT).
