No. 7 Sharks Roll No. 14 Azusa Pacific 6-1

AZUSA, Calif. – The seventh ranked Hawai'i Pacific University women bounced back with a vengeance on Wednesday, ripping No. 14 Azusa Pacific 6-1 at APU's Munson & Bavougian Tennis Complex.

The No. 7 Sharks (9-5) won all but the last singles position on the 14th ranked Cougars (8-5) in the near sweep.

The Sharks claimed the doubles point with their top duo, Shaline Pipa and Marleen Tilgner blanking Carolyn Brooner and April Wong 6-0, and finished it with No. 3's Valentina Mokrova and Marta Ruszczynska downing Madison Kane and Audrey Stewart 6-4. The No. 2 position featuring Elodie Busson and Mihoki Miyahara were tied at 5-5 against Lilla Plasek and Eleonora Liga when the point was won.

HPU got the singles going with Ruszczynska beating Plasek 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5, but APU scored its only point when Rikona Murakami fell at No. 6 to Katherine Nguyen 6-1, 6-1 to pull to 2-1.

That's when the Sharks went to work. Mokrova won at No. 4 over Stewart 6-1, 6-3, with Miyahara taking No. 3 against Brooner 7-5, 6-2 to clinch the win for HPU.

HPU's No. 16 Pipa played down at No. 2, and needed three sets to beat Wong 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. The feature singles match was the last one in, with Tilgner upsetting third ranked Liga 6-3, 6-7 (7-9), 10-6.

The Sharks have one more match on their southern California trip. HPU meets No. 4 Indianapolis on Wednesday morning at the Munson & Bavougian Tennis Complex. First serve is scheduled for 5 a.m. HST (8 a.m. PDT).
