AZUSA, Calif. – The No. 7 Hawai'i Pacific University women stunned No. 4 Indianapolis 4-1 on Wednesday morning in action at Azusa Pacific's Munson & Bavougian Tennis Complex.
The seventh ranked Sharks (10-5) wrapped up their southern California road trip with by handing the Greyhounds (7-2) their second loss of the season by winning the doubles point and taking three of the top four singles positions.
HPU opened with the No. 1 duo of
Shaline Pipa and
Marleen Tilgner ripping 22nd ranked Anna Novikova and Arina Amaning 6-2. UIndy took the No. 3 spot with 29th ranked Miassane Aik and Maria Solnyshkina downing
Valentina Mokrova and
Marta Ruszczynska 6-3. The point was decided at No. 2 where the Sharks
Elodie Busson and
Mihoki Miyahara beat Bella Dunlap and Sofia Sharonova 6-3 for the 1-0 lead.
But the Greyhounds answered to start singles play, with Aik taking down Busson at 6-3, 6-1 to even the score at 1-all.
HPU responded in a big way. Tilgner took the point at No. 2 singles upsetting sixth ranked Dunlap 6-4, 6-3, then 16th ranked Pipa won extended sets against 14th ranked Novikova 7-5, 7-5 to take the 3-1 advantage. The match was clinched at No. 4, where Miyahara defeated Amaning 6-3, 7-5 to give the Sharks the win.
The last two positions were split sets and into the third sets when the match was halted. At No. 5, Mokrova and Kristina Lagoda went 3-6, 6-3 and Lagoda was up 1-0. At No. 6, Ruszczynska and 22nd ranked Lea Cakarevic were tied 3-6, 7-6, 3-3 at cessation.
The Sharks return home and will play again on Sunday, March 27 against cross-town rival Chaminade. The match at the Kailua Racquet Club has a Noon start time.
