Sharks Shutout Sunbirds 1-0, Rain Halts Game 2

KANEOHE, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University won the first game of a PacWest Conference double-header against Dominican (Calif.) 1-0, but the rain fell hard enough to postpone game two after the third inning on Wednesday afternoon at Howard Okita Field.

The Sharks (7-9, 1-2) held on to a tight game one eventually closing the 1-0 shutout against the Penguins (7-15, 4-9). Game two was all Sharks scoring a trifecta of runs in the first three frames before rain caused a pause on the game.

Neither team found an opportunity to post a run through the first three and a half innings of game one. Coming to the bottom of the fourth, HPU, with two down, struck gold with a double to right center by freshman Jewel Larson of Waipahu, Hawai'i/Pearl City. Her freshman teammate Savannah Salyer-Kovacs brought her in with a single to right field.

Three more scoreless innings for the Penguins closed the game for the Sharks with a 1-0 triumph.

HPU freshman Taylor Thompson of Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle threw the complete game only allowing four hits in her second shutout of the season. She concluded the seventh frame putting down all three with swinging strikeouts for a total of six on the game. With her win in game one, she moves to 5-4 on the season.

The Penguin's starter Shelby Keltner went three innings allowing four hits. Her relief, Rosa Leguria came in for the second set of three allowing one earned run on three hits. She took the loss and moves to 2-3 on the year.

Game two had a hot start with the Sharks putting up three runs in the first inning on two walks and a base hit to load the bases for sophomore Hoku Ching of Honolulu, Hawai'i/Roosevelt who tripled down the left field line for a 3-0 lead.

Almost the exact same inning in the second for the Sharks with hits from Torres and junior Brandi Leong of Wahiawa, Hawai'i/Leilehua. Another walk to load the bases, and sophomore Kanoe Tanigawa of Mililani, Hawai'i/Maryknoll hammered a double to right center scoring all three runners and extending the lead to 6-0.

The rain came in heavy during the bottom of the third, and Dominican's pitchers struggled to find the strike zone allowing three more runs on two hits with three walks and two wild pitches scoring runners.

After one rain delay and resumption, the rain returned to force the suspension of the game to Thursday. Because of field conditions, the continued game and the scheduled doubleheader against the Penguins has been moved to Sand Island Field with the first pitch at 11 a.m. and the doubleheader to follow.
