SUNNYVALE, Calif. – The No. 7 Hawai'i Pacific University women returned to playing Division II competition and shut out Fresno Pacific 4-0 on Wednesday afternoon at the Sunnyvale Tennis Center.
The seventh-ranked Sharks (6-3) nearly swept all three doubles positions from the Sunbirds (6-4) in winning the doubles point, then took the top three singles spots for the win.
The Sharks top duo of
Shaline Pipa and
Marleen Tilgner blanked Maria Borodii and Lea Falentin 6-0 at No. 1, followed by
Valentina Mokrova and
Marta Ruszczynska winning against Alice Marques and Elise Leik 6-3 at No. 3.
Elodie Busson and
Mihoki Miyahara led Alice Di Matteo and Sanne Brull 5-3 when the point was won.
The Sharks then took the top three singles spots with Pipa winning at No. 1 against Borodii 6-0, 6-1, and quickly followed by Tilgner's triumph at No. 3 over Di Matteo 6-2, 6-0. It took a third set at No. 2 before Busson downed Falentin 6-0, 3-6, 6-0. In the unfinished spots, Miyahara was up at No. 4 against Marques 6-0, 5-2, with Ruszczynska and Brull splitting sets at No. 5, 3-6, 5-2, and Leik had just finished the first set against HPU's
Olivia Kjaer up 7-6 when the match was won.
The Sharks are back in action on Thursday when they meet Academy of Art at the Bay Club South San Francisco. First serve is set for 10 a.m. HST (Noon PST).
HPU also announced that the No. 7 Sharks added a match on Saturday against the No. 21 Women of Troy at USC. The match starts at 2 p.m. HST (4 p.m. PST) at the Marks Tennis Stadium in Los Angeles. A live stream of all six courts is provided by USC.
