TURLOCK, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University opened the 2022 Turlock Tournament of Champions with a 3-0 loss to San Francisco State and a 5-1 loss to Cal Poly Humboldt at Pedretti Park.
The Sharks (14-23) seemed to be their own worst enemy on opening day, as all three runs against the Gators (15-19) were unearned and three of the five runs against the Lumberjacks (12-24) were unearned.
Junior
Brandi Leong of Wahiawa, Hawai'i/Leilehua led the Sharks on the day going 3-for-8 and scoring HPU's lone run. She was 2-for-4 against SF State. Sophomore
Kanoe Tanigawa of Mililani, Hawai'i/Maryknoll went 2-for-3 against Humboldt and sophomore
Hoku Ching of Honolulu/Roosevelt had a triple against the Lumberjacks for the sole extra-base hit.
Senior
Malia Torres of Danville, Calif./Monte Vista (6-11) suffered the loss against SF State, allowing three runs on six hits and striking out one in the complete game. Freshman
Taylor Thompson of Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle (8-12) allowed five runs, just two earned, against nine hits with two walks and nine strikeouts in the complete outing against Humboldt.
In the first contest, San Francisco State scored all three runs after two outs in the third. After a leadoff single and two ground outs, the Gators scored on an outfield error. With the extra life, SF State added a single, then a two-RBI triple for the 3-0 lead. HPU stranded seven runners through the game in being shutout.
Kelly Taylor (3-3) picked up the win with a complete game allowing six hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
The Sharks chalked up the first run of the game against Cal Poly Humboldt, as Leong led off the game by reaching on an error, went to second on a wild pitch, and advanced to third on a ground out. She scored on another wild pitch for the 1-0 lead.
The Lumberjacks answered with two runs in the second on a wild pitch and two errors. Humboldt plated three more in the fourth thanks to a pair of errors to go with an RBI double for the 5-1 lead.
The Sharks threatened in the seventh, loading the bases but couldn't add another run.
Gaige Garcia (4-5) got the win in relief, going 6.2 shutout innings allowing five hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Starter Vanessa Richie went just a third of an inning, allowing the lone run on a hit in facing three batters.
HPU play twice on Saturday in the tournament, meeting Montana State-Billings at the Turlock Sports Complex at 7:30 a.m. HST (10:30 a.m. PDT). The Sharks travel over to Warrior Field at Stanislaus State to take on the home team in an 11 a.m. HST contest (2 p.m. PDT).
