Sharks Get A Win and a Loss at TOC on Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TURLOCK, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University picked up a 5-3 win over Montana State Billings, but fell to host Stanislaus State 3-1 in Saturday action at the 2022 Turlock Tournament of Champions.
 
The Sharks (15-24) took advantage of three errors by the MSUB Yellowjackets (10-23) to overcome a 3-0 deficit to grab the 5-3 win.
 
Sophomore Poliahu Aina of Kailua, Hawai 'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama, junior Brandi Leong of Wahiawa, Hawai'i/Leilehua, and freshman Neva Poulin of Corona, Calif./Norco each went 2-for-4 against MSUB, while junior Noel Saunders of Pearl City, Hawai'i/Roosevelt went 2-for-2.
 
Senior Malia Torres of Danville, Calif./Monte Vista (7-11) got the win, picking up her 17th complete game allowing three runs on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts. MSUB starter Julia Qualteri (5-7) took the loss, allowing four runs, two earned, on seven hits with two walks and a strikeout. Shelby Martin allowed an unearned run on three hits in 1.2 innings pitched.
 
MSU Billings collected all three runs in the bottom of the fourth on two RBI doubles and a sacrifice fly for a 3-0 lead.
 
HPU came back with a run in the fifth on an RBI single by sophomore Hoku Ching of Honolulu/Roosevelt.
 
But it was the top of the sixth that gave HPU the lead. After a leadoff single, the Jackets committed a two-base error to setup and RBI single by freshman Jewel Larson of Waipahu, Hawai'i/Pearl City. Junior Savanna Salyer-Kovacs of Camarillo, Calif./Camarillo hit an RBI grounder to score a run to tie the game and Saunders laced an RBI single up the middle to put the Sharks up 4-3. In the seventh, HPU added an insurance run from another throwing error that scored Aina for the 5-3 final.
 
The Sharks lost their second game of the day, as Stanislaus State won 3-1 on campus at Warrior Field. No other information on the contest is available at this time.
 
HPU concludes action in the Tournament of Champions back at the Pedretti Sports Complex with a game against Cal State San Bernadino at 6 a.m. HST (9 a.m. PDT).
