No. 7 Sharks Take Down No. 2 Barry 4-3

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – Junior Jan Heine dug down to win the deciding match in three sets to lead the No. 7 Hawai'i Pacific University men to a 4-3 triumph over No. 2 Barry (Fla.) on Friday afternoon at Sanlando Park.
 
The seventh ranked Sharks (12-1) had to do it the hard way against the second ranked Bucs (13-4) after dropping the doubles point, but responding with four wins in singles.
                                                                                        
Heine was the star of the match for the Sharks. Playing at No. 6, Heine faced Hugo Cazaban. The teams were tied at 3-3 as Heine came back to win the second set 6-4 after falling to Cazaban in the opening set 6-2. In the third set, Heine jumped out to a 5-3 lead only to have Cazaban answer and tie the set at 5-5. But Heine broke Cazaban to take the 6-5 advantage and won the set and the grueling two-and-a half hour match on serve 7-5 to give HPU the 4-3 win.
 
The Bucs had the early advantage, taking doubles. At No. 1, BU's 27th ranked team of Ignasi Forcano and Martin Gutierrez upset HPU's 16th ranked duo of Jan Pleva and Jordi Walder 6-3, but the Sharks responded at No. 3 with Heine and Benjamin Loccisano downing Alejandro Palacios and Tim Buttner 6-4. The Bucs took the point as 33rd ranked Alejandro Gallego and Arnau Rodriguez beat the Sharks 47th ranked Jakub Beran and Robin Sanz 6-3 for the 1-0 lead.
 
Barry claimed a 2-0 lead by when 12th ranked Gallego beat Pleva 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2, but HPU came back thanks to the Sharks depth. Loccisano won at No. 5 against 63rd ranked Rodriguez 6-4, 6-0, and Beran took No. 4 over 62nd ranked Forcano 7-6, 6-4. HPU grabbed a 3-2 advantage when 61st ranked Sanz claimed No. 3 against 41st ranked Alessandro Giuliato 7-6, 6-4.
 
The top singles spot was an upset, as Barry tied the match at 3-3 with eighth ranked Palacios beating second ranked Walder 6-3, 7-6, setting up the showdown at No. 6 for Heine's heroics.
 
The Sharks don't have much time to celebrate the triumph as they are back in action on Saturday against No. 3 Saint Leo (Fla.). Match time is set for 6 a.m. HST (Noon EDT) at Sanlando Park.
