No. 7 Sharks Defeat No. 3 Saint Leo 4-1

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – The No. 7 Hawai'i Pacific University men grabbed another big win on Saturday by beating No. 3 Saint Leo (Fla.) 4-1 at Sanlando Park.
 
The seventh ranked Sharks (13-1) picked up their second straight win against top three competition with the win over the third ranked Lions (17-4) in SLU's final regular season match.
 
The Sharks took the doubles point thanks to a tiebreaker win at the No. 1 position as 16th ranked Jan Pleva and Jordi Walder beat fifth ranked Bruno Faletto and Willem van den Akker 7-6. The doubles were tied after HPU's 47th ranked Jakub Beran and Robin Sanz took the No. 2 spot against Vincent Thiel and Bradley Eidenmuller 6-3, but SLU grabbed No. 3 with Nicolas Bacella and Luis Iriarte downing Jan Heine and Benjamin Loccisano 6-3.
 
The Sharks depth in singles once again came through for a victory.
 
Sanz, ranked 61st, quickly won at No. 3 against 24th ranked Thiel 6-0, 6-2, and Loccisano won at No. 5 against Iriarte 6-4, 6-3 to grab a 3-0 lead. The Lions got on the scoreboard with a win at No. 6 as Eidenmuller beat Heine 6-4, 6-3. Then it was Beran who got the win for the Sharks, taking No. 4 over Ghali Mensour 7-6, 6-3.
 
The unfinished matches were battles at the top of the lineup. At No. 1, second ranked Walder led 4-3 in the second set against fourth ranked Faletto who had taken the first set 7-6 in a tiebreaker. At No. 2, Pleva was up 5-4 in the second to 51st ranked Bacella, who also had won the first set 7-6 in a tiebreaker.
 
The Sharks close the regular season on Sunday when they square off against No. 8 West Florida at Sanlando Park. Match time is scheduled for 6 a.m. HST (Noon EDT). HPU then travels to Arizona for the PacWest Conference Championships at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex in the Phoenix suburb of Surprise.
