HILO, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University scored seven runs in the last four innings in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader, but it wasn't enough as Hawai'i Hilo had scored the first 10 runs for a 10-7 win on Saturday afternoon at Wong Stadium.
The Sharks (17-17, 11-12) took an early 4-0 lead against the Vulcans (23-13, 12-11) in the second contest, but UHH rallied for six runs in the third, fourth and fifth to post a 6-4 lead when the rains came in the top of the sixth.
Senior
Diego Harris of Los Angeles/Crespi went 4-for-4 in the first game with an RBI, while junior
Richard Higa of Honolulu/University Lab had a double and two RBI.
Sophomore Giancarlos Cortez of San Diego, Calif./St. Augustine (3-3) took the loss allowing five runs, four earned, on five hits with a walk and a strikeout in two innings. Junior
Erik Peterson of San Jose, Calif./King's Academy pitched three innings allowing five runs, three earned, on five hits with a strikeout. Freshman
Ryan Schuelke of Austin, Texas/SF Austin HS, allowed just one hit in three innings with two walks and two strikeouts.
UH Hilo's Kyle Alcorn (2-2) got the win, throwing seven innings allowing four runs on eight hits with three strikeouts. Eamon Velarde pitched an inning allowing a run on two hits with a strikeout, while Ty Honda allowed two runs on two hits with a walk, but got the game into a save situation for John Kea to collect his 10th save of the year allowing a walk in a third of an inning.
The Sharks battled in the second game and grabbed a lead thanks to senior
Braxton Wehrle of Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman with a homerun in the second. But the game was halted with the Sharks with a runner on first with two out in the top of the sixth. After an hour delay, the game was suspended to be finished on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. before the teams play a non-conference doubleheader at Wong Stadium.
