HONOLULU -- After a distinguished 35-year career as an athletics communicator and administrator, Hawai 'I Pacific University Assistant Athletics Director of Strategic Communication Bill Powers announced his retirement from the profession.
 
The 61-year-old Powers, who spent the last six years at HPU, leaves the university on Friday.
 
In addition to telling the story of the Sharks, serving as a statistician, game administrator, broadcaster, public address announcer and occasional performer of the national anthem and Hawai'i Ponoi, Powers served the NCAA, PacWest Conference and his fellow sports information professionals.
 
Powers just completed his term as the President of the Division II Sports Information Directors of America (D2SIDA), and also served on the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Advisory Council. He also completed a four-year term on the NCAA Division II Men's and Women's Tennis Committee, and has served on the PacWest Scheduling Committee.
 
The third longest-tenured sports information director at HPU behind Neil Everett Moffit (nine years) and Trey Garman (seven years), Powers was honored with HPU's Ke Kaukahi Award in the Spring of 2018 for a recognition of excellence by the Staff Council.
 
"I am humbled and honored to have served with such great people at HPU," said Powers. "It was time to step back a bit. I'm looking forward to the next stage of my life, but I won't be a stranger."
 
"Bill will be missed here," said HPU Executive Director of Athletics Dr. Debbie Snell. "His treasure of knowledge and willingness to do anything is going to be hard to replace."
