HONOLULU, Hawai'i - In a thrilling clash at the Hoops In Hawai'i Classic, the Hawai'i Pacific University (HPU) women's basketball team showcased resilience and determination, securing a hard-fought 49-46 victory over the formidable Carroll College Saints. Coming off a challenging loss to Fresno Pacific, the Sharks entered the matchup hungry for redemption, while the Saints, ranked 5th in the NAIA, looked to conclude their stay on Oahu with a victory.
First-Half Dominance
HPU wasted no time setting the tone in the first half, holding the Saints to under 33% shooting from the field and securing a four-point lead. True freshman
Leslie Mojica emerged as a key contributor, leading the Sharks in scoring at the break with six points. Defensive stalwarts

The second half saw Mojica continue to shine as the guard from El Paso, Texas displayed her versatility, finishing the game as the leading scorer with 11 points. She also made significant contributions on the defensive end, tallying three steals and five rebounds complemented by two assists,. Her all-around performance proved pivotal in the Sharks' quest for victory.
Controlled Momentum
Maintaining control of the game, the Sharks extended their lead to 47-41 after an impressive pull-up jumper by
Erika Glenn. Despite a late surge by the Saints, orchestrated through a quick 5-0 run, the Sharks held their ground. Mojica's late free throw provided crucial insurance, sealing a 49-46 triumph for Head Coach
Ray Alvarado and marking the team's third victory of the season.

She is now on pace to make history as the first PacWest player to achieve 100 blocks in a season since Azusa Pacific's Laura Pranger's 101-block feat in the 2021-22 season.

As the Sharks officially conclude the 2023 portion of their schedule, they do so on a high note. Their focus now shifts to early January, where they will resume action with a conference matchup against the Academy of Art in the Bay Area.
