HONOLULU, Hawai'i - In a highly anticipated rematch at the Hoops In Hawai'i Classic, the Hawai'i Pacific University (HPU) Sharks battled fiercely against the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves, seeking to extend their impressive seven-game winning streak. However, the Seawolves had plans of their own, aiming to rebound from a tough loss to San Bernardino the night before.
The first half set the stage for an intense showdown, with the Seawolves establishing a narrow four-point lead, courtesy of Jaron Williams' 10-points to start the game.
Charlie Weber, matched the intensity with seven points of his own, ensuring HPU stayed within striking distance as they headed into the halftime break.
The Sharks, no strangers to close contests this season, entered the second half with determination, eyeing redemption against the very team that handed them their last defeat. Dominique "Diggy" Winbush emerged as a key player for HPU in the second half, contributing a remarkable 16 points. Despite Winbush's efforts, Williams' career night for the Seawolves proved pivotal in securing a 77-72 victory and putting an end to HPU's unbeaten month of basketball.
Head Coach
Jesse Nakanishi's squad showcased resilience and outstanding individual performances, even in the face of a narrow defeat.
Charlie Weber, overcoming a delayed start to his season, provided a spark off the bench with 11 crucial points. This marked the second occasion this season that Weber reached double figures, showcasing his growing impact on the team.
Veteran
Maj Dusanic displayed his all-around prowess, contributing 15 points, distributing two assists, and leading the team with seven rebounds. Dusanic's ability to impact the game in various facets continues to be a valuable asset for the Sharks.
In a December to Remember, Winbush capped off the month with his second 20-point outing. Despite falling short in this hard-fought battle, the Sharks maintain an impressive 7-3 record as they head into the 2024 portion of their schedule. The team remains focused on their upcoming challenge, an early January matchup against the Academy of Art, where they aim to maintain their undefeated PacWest Conference record and build on the foundation of a promising start to the season.
