Baseball Splits Second Double-Header, Takes Series 3-1 over Minnesota Crookston

WAIPAHU – The Hawaii Pacific University baseball team continued opening weekend by playing the University of Minnesota Crookston for their second double-header matchup at CORP 4 field Sunday afternoon.

The Sharks (3-1) fell 21-13 in game one, but bounced back for a 10-3 victory in the second match against the Golden Eagles (1-3). HPU will battle against Northwood University in a 5-game set, the first one on Friday, February 17. Meanwhile, UMC are off for 12 days before heading to Missouri to take on the University of Missouri - St. Louis.

Game One

It was the most back-and-forth baseball game in the first six innings, with both teams scoring 12 runs. Crookston dominated in the second inning, scoring seven runs. However, it was Hawaii Pacific that started the run parade, scoring two off the bats of sophomore Tejean Smith and junior Kota Suzuki

After the seven spot in the top of the second for the Golden Eagles, the Sharks responded with four of their own. A couple of wild pitches scored seniors Cole Kashimoto and Nicholas Jio, before junior Travis Johnson and graduate Richard Higa singled in the other two runs.

The Sharks retook the lead in the third, bringing in a couple of runs to make the game 8-7. However, the Golden Eagles used five runs in the next two innings to regain the lead. But, like always, Hawaii Pacific responded, tying the game once again at 12 runs a piece.

The steam slowly ran out for HPU, as UMC exploded for nine runs. The comeback ability that was seen throughout the start of the season could no longer be found. The Golden Eagles took game one by a football score of 21-13.

Nicholas and Smith both had three hits, while Kashimoto, Suzuki, Higa, and freshman Noah Hata all had two. Smith, like last night, led the RBI category, bringing in four runs.

The bright spot in the pitching department was freshman Dylan Honda, who was holding the Golden Eagles scoreless for two and a third innings. Unfortunately, a three run long ball took him out of the game. Despite that, he struck out two batters.

Game Two

The second game may have been delayed by the rain, but Hawaii Pacific's firepower never cooled down. In the second inning, freshmen Frankie Peralez and Noah Hata got on board, setting up junior Daniel Johnson, who shot a single up the middle to score Peralez. Johnson then baited out a pick-off throw, which sailed over the first baseman's head, allowing Hata to make the score 2-0.

Things started to get out of hand in the bottom of the third for Minnesota Crookston. Hawaii Pacific, with two outs to their name, used two hit batters, two walks, four singles, and a wild pitch to score seven runs, extending their lead to 9-0. Senior Cole Kashimoto finished the scoring outburst with a two RBI single.

The game quieted down after that, with neither team scoring a single run for the next two innings. Kashimoto would score on a wild pitch in the sixth, before Minnesota Crookston got on the board in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs. HPU ended up taking game two 10-3, winning the series, three games to one.

Peralez and Kashimoto led the way with two hits each. Kashimoto, alongside fellow senior Nicholas Jio, both brought in two runs.

Getting the start on the mound was junior Travis Johnson, who pitched a flawless three innings, striking out five of the nine batters he retired. Senior Daniel Cortez and freshman Jett Ah Sam then combined for three innings, not allowing a single hit, all while striking out two batters a piece.
