Baseball Falls Twice to Northwood

WAIPAHU – The Hawaii Pacific University baseball team hosted Northwood University for a double-header Thursday afternoon at CORP 4 field.

The Sharks (3-3) fell 7-2 in game one before falling 11-4 in the second match against the Wolves (2-0). HPU and NU plan to battle tomorrow, however, the weather may change that. If the weather is good, their game is set for 2:00 p.m. HT. If the rain cancels the match, their next game will be Saturday, February 18, at CORP 4 field, with first pitch set for 2:00 p.m. HT.

Game One

It was a pitchers duel to start the game as a total of five hits were allowed through the first four innings. The Wolves striked first, using a couple of HPU mistakes to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth. A long ball by Northwood player Matt Magno in the sixth extended Hawaii Pacific's deficit to three runs.

However, in the bottom of the sixth, junior Travis Johnson smoked a ball deep to left field for the first homerun of the season by any Shark player. Later in the seventh, an error by the Wolves helped senior Cole Kashimoto single in senior D.J. Stephens to narrow the score to 3-2.

Unfortunately, a giant ninth inning for Northwood's offense saw Hawaii Pacific fall behind 7-2. HPU loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame, but could not capitalize with any runs.

Kashimoto, Johnson, sophomore Tejean Smith, graduate Richard Higa, and freshman Noah Hata each earned a hit.

Starting on the mound, junior Jack O'Brien went seven innings, giving up one earned run and striking out six batters. After the ninth inning got out of control senior Shane Adams came in to close it out, all while not giving up a hit.

Game Two

This time around, it was Hawaii Pacific who jumped out ahead first. Senior Nicholas Jio doubled down the left field line before junior Kota Suzuki singled him home in the bottom of the first. The Wolves would respond with two in the top of the second, but a ground out by freshman Noah Hata would score senior D.J. Stephens

Much like the first game, Northwood found an inning where their bats dominated HPU's pitching staff. The third inning saw five runners score to give a 7-2 lead to NU. The Sharks did respond, scoring two off a wild pitch in the fourth, but that was all the damage they could do.

A three-run shot in the sixth and another run in the seventh sealed the fate for Hawaii Pacific, who fell 11-4 in game two.

Suzuki and Stephens led the offense, finding three and two hits respectively. They also scored two of the four HPU runs.

In a tough game for the pitchers, freshman Dylan Honda once again shined, pitching an inning and a third of shutout baseball. This included a fourth inning where he struck out the side.
