Baseball Drops Game One 11-3, Game Two Postponed Until Tomorrow

WAIPAHU – The Hawaii Pacific University baseball team, after a couple days of cancellations, hosted Northwood University for a double-header at CORP 4 field Sunday afternoon.

The Sharks (3-4) fell 11-3 in game one before game two was postponed with the Wolves (3-0) leading 9-6 in the bottom of the fifth. HPU and NU plan to continue the second game tomorrow, with first pitch set for 10:00 a.m. HT. Following that, they will play one more game.

Game One

Northwood opened up the scoring with a run in the top of the first. Hawaii Pacific found their response in the bottom of the second. Freshman Noah Hata earned a single before stealing second. Graduate Richard Higa then came up and slapped a ball into right field, scoring Hata and tying up the game.

Both teams then converted a second run in the third. For HPU, junior Chase Taylor launched a long ball to deep left field for his first homerun of the season. Unfortunately for the Sharks, a five run inning in the fourth propelled the Wolves ahead.

A triple by senior Cole Kashimoto would help Hawaii Pacific grab another run, but the damage had been done. HPU fell 11-3 to NU in the first game.

Kashimoto and freshman Frankie Peralez led the way with two hits each. Meanwhile, the Sharks pitching staff combined for seven strikeouts.

Game Two

It seemed like Northwood University enjoyed five run innings, as they opened game two with authority. This time around, Hawaii Pacific had an answer in the bottom of the second.

First sophomore Tejean Smith got on base with a walk, before senior D.J. Stephens smacked his first homerun of the season toward left field. After that, the offense surrendered two outs, but the inning was still not over. Graduate Richard Higa, junior Jonathan Lucio, and senior Cole Kashimoto loaded the bases. Junior Kota Suzuki then drew a walk to score a run. With bases still loaded, junior Travis Johnson slapped a double to left field to score all three runners, giving the Sharks a 6-5 lead.

Sadly, the Wolves did not let this bad inning shake them, responding with three runs in the third, and another one in the fourth. Before HPU could begin hitting in the fifth, the weather decided that the game shall be postponed until tomorrow. They will pick up where they left off with Hawaii Pacific trailing 9-6 in the bottom of the fifth. First pitch is set for 10 a.m. with location still being decided.
