Softball Walks-Off Game Two to Split Double-Header with WWU

HONOLULU - The Hawaii Pacific University softball team split their doubleheader against Western Washington Saturday afternoon at Sand Island Softball Field.

The Sharks (1-8) had to call a quick audible with a nasty weather system and played two games in town for the day. The Vikings (5-4) remain in the islands for a series with Chaminade and Hilo.

Game One
The first game much like the weather early on was gloomy. The Sharks were held to just two hits in the first game. The Vikings opened up the scoring in the second inning after the first two batters reached base HPU managed to get an out, but three straight singles would bring home two runners and a 2-0 lead.

Western Washington struck again in the fourth after the first batter walked, she stole second and third to set up another run. Where a few batters later she would be driven in extending the lead to 3-0. The final run of the ballgame came in the fifth inning after an error allowed the first batter aboard. The next batter hit one in the game reaching a 4-0 lead.

Both pitchers went the distance in this one, with HPU's Taylor Thompson allowing three earned runs on six hits and one punchout.

As for the offense, it was all Tiari Hernandez scooping up both hits in the game as the Sharks looked to get something going for game two.

Game Two
In a low-scoring pitcher's duel, it would come down to the bottom of the seventh for the Sharks.

Western Washington's only run of the ballgame came in the top of the third from a solo blast over left field.

With minimal chances coming in the game, the Sharks found some momentum when they needed it most. In the bottom of the seventh Hoku Ching led off with a single to get the ball rolling. Kaylyn Dosch came in to pinch hit and drew a walk building the pressure at the ballpark. After a mound visit and Neva Poulin coming in to pinch hit, Poulin hit a slow grounder that drew no throw at first.

Tiari Hernandez stepped up with a chance at glory, but remained patient waiting for her pitch that never came and drew another walk for HPU's first run and tied the game 1-1. With no outs and the bases still loaded we saw our first pitching change of the day. With a new arm in the game The freshman Emily Wheat stepped in the box and became the hero of the game watching four balls go past her for a walk-off walk.

Tita Saunders and Hoku Ching led the team in hits, while Hernandez and Wheat's one RBI a piece was the difference in the end.
On the mound, Hailey Yoshida allowed one run on five hits and a pair of punchouts in seven innings of work. Yoshida earned her first win career win in her second start of the year.

Up next for softball is a matchup with St. Martin's on Monday with the first pitch slated for noon.
