Sharks Sweep Red Leafs with Another Walk-Off in Game Two

KANEOHE - The Hawaii Pacific University softball team swept Simon Fraser in their doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Howard. A Okita Field.

The Sharks (3-8) offense flourished in game one, while last-minute heroics in back-to-back weeks helped get them their first series sweep of the year.

Game One
Three consecutive batters reached base on singles in the bottom of the second inning to give Jewel Larson a chance. Larson found a pitch she liked and could poke it deep enough for a sacrifice fly scoring the game's first run.

The Red Leads struck back immediately in the top of the third after a two-out double setup Caitlyn Affeldt who singled in the run and tied the game 1-1.

With runs coming across HPU found more in the bottom of the third with two batters reaching base on singles. With one out Hailey Yoshida grounded out putting both runners in scoring position. With Tiari Hernandez at the plate, Red Leaf's pitcher and catcher had mishaps on two pitches bringing home both runners on a passed ball and then a wild pitch giving HPU the lead 3-1 after three innings.

Simon Fraser continued the two-out magic in the third when a stolen base turned throwing error allowed a run to come across and brought them back within one run.

What felt like was going to be a 1-2-3 bottom half of the inning quickly turned into another run for the Sharks after a no-doubter was launched off the bat of Jewel Larson for her first homer of the season.

In the top of the fifth, the leadoff batter smoked a triple in the gap before a few batters later being driven in on a single to left cutting the lead back to one.

HPU had the first four batters on the inning reach base, sizing up to be a big inning. Another passed ball by the catcher scored the first run of the inning, and a ground ball fielders choice brought across the second. With runners still in scoring position Brandi Leong shot a ball through the right side for the third run of the inning and extended the lead to 7-3.

The Sharks added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth and shut out the Red Leafs for a final 9-3 in game one.

Larson, Wheat and Leong all earned a pair of hits, but Larson's bomb put her as the game's leader in RBIs.

Hailey Yoshida earned back-to-back wins in a complete game. She allowed three runs on six hits in the contest.

Game Two
The Sharks continued their offensive attack on the Red Leafs as the first three runners reached base before Kanoe Tanigawa's sac fly brought in the first run of the game.
After, the bats went quiet all around for a few innings before the Sharks broke through the scoring drought on a double down the left field line from Hoku Ching that scored Leong from second base.

In the top of the sixth with HPU leading 2-0, the Red Leafs were running out of time. The first batter of the inning put a ball in the left-field gap for a double. The next batter Cassidy Affeldt found the pitch she liked and crushed a home run over right field to square the game up at 2-2.

HPU held Simon Fraser after they got two hits in the top of the seventh and came up with a chance to walk off their second game in as many weeks. Leong got things started with a single to right field before being hit over to scoring position. With one out and the runner on second Yoshida stepped in as a pinch hitter and on her first pitch connected with a ball that would end up at the base of the wall scoring the run for a walk-off double.

Leong was an offensive leader in the second game with scoring both times she got on base.

Gianna Kerschbaum got the nod in game two and was phenomenal except for the one blemish in the sixth. She recorded seven strikeouts in her complete game, with only one walk and seven hits.

Up next for the Sharks will be the start of PacWest conference play on Feb. 27 at Howard. A Okita Field. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. HT.
