Baseball Take Doubleheader Against Biola

WAIPAHU - The Hawaii Pacific University baseball team swept day one's doubleheaders against Biola University on Friday afternoon at Central Oahu Regional Park.

The Sharks (5-4, 2-0 PacWest) battled through on-and-off showers to grab their first two conference wins for the second season in a row under head coach Dane Fujinaka. The Eagles (4-10, 0-2 PacWest) gave up control of the all-time series as both teams will enter Saturday with 20 wins.

Game One
HPU got on the board first in the first inning with Tejean Smith and Travis Johnson reaching with two outs in the inning. The Biola catcher attempted to back-pick Johnson and had the ball get away from the first baseman allowing Smith to score from second base on the play and Johnson to reach third. In the same at-bat, D.J. Stephens beat out a single up the middle scoring Johnson and took a 2-0 lead in the first.

The Eagles bounced back in the top of the second with two solo home runs from the bats of Wyatt Duncan and Sam Lisiak to tie the game.

The tie held for a few innings until a few bloopers helped Biola take the lead in the fifth. A blooper over the second baseman ended up as a double, and the next batter grounded out to move the runner over. AJ Ortiz up to bat popped one up over the first baseman and perfectly placed it on the line allowing the runner to score, breaking the tie 3-2.

Hawaii found more two-out momentum in the sixth, with Richard Higa getting things started with a single to center. On the first pitch of the next at-bat, Frankie Peralez took a ball to the shoulder putting two runners on. Chase Taylor stepped in the box next and found a pitch hanging out to dry and crushed a three-run tater over the left field wall regaining the lead 5-3.

HPU added one last insurance in the seventh after a ball hit to left field went off the left fielder's glove and allowed Cole Kashimoto to reach third base. On the first pitch of the next at-bat, Kota Suzuki took it right back up the middle for a single, an RBI, and a 6-3 lead.

Taylor's three-run bomb led the team in RBIs, while Stephens led the way with two hits in the ballgame.

Jack O'Brien (1-1) earned his first win of the season in seven innings of work. O'Brien gave up three runs on three hits while collecting six strikeouts in the outing. Dylan Honda came in for a 1-2-3 eighth and Ryan Inouye mirrored him in the ninth to earn his first save.

Game Two
After a lifeless first inning, Travis Johnson roped a double in the gap to lead off the bottom of the second. Suzuki stepped in the box and delivered a single over second base scoring Johnson to open up a 1-0 lead.

The Sharks threatened in the bottom of the third with bases loaded and two outs. Designated hitter Noah Hata stepped in and was hit-by-pitch to get one run across. With the pressure on the Eagles to mitigate the damage the pressure got to the pitcher where he threw four straight balls to walk Daniel Johnson and add a second run in the inning. After a pitching change, Richard Higa popped up the first pitch for what was thought to be an easy out but was dropped by the shortstop scoring two runs before getting thrown out at second. The two added runs on the error grew the HPU lead to 5-0

Not to be discouraged the Eagles managed a base runner in the top of the fourth before Sam Lisiak barreled one up for a two-run homer cutting into the HPU lead 5-2.

Fast forward to the bottom of the fifth, the Sharks found themselves back in familiar territory with bases loaded and two outs. Like deja vu, a routine play turned into an error by the second baseman scoring two runs and extending the inning.  With more life to the inning, Stephens stepped up to bat and smoked a two-run single through the left side blowing the game open for the Sharks who led 9-2.

In the sixth, the Sharks brought across one more after Johnson doubled and was moved to third on a fly ball. Hata put one deep enough in center field for a sacrifice fly to make it 10-2.

Biola got runners on in the seventh, but nothing meaningful as Makana Quia was called on with one out to finish out the game. It took Quia only three pitches to get the last two outs for a final 10-2 HPU win.

Andrew Hauck got the nod in game two where he earned his second victory and first complete game of the year. Hauck delivered 6.1 innings where he gave up three hits, and two runs, while he also took home five strikeouts.

Suzuki collected a pair of hits for the third time this season, while Stephens led the team with two RBIs.

The Sharks and the Eagle are back at it tomorrow for another doubleheader with the first pitch slated for 2:00 p.m. HT.
