Softball Drops Multiple One Run Battles with Biola

KANEOHE - The Hawaii Pacific University softball team dropped two battles to Biola on Monday afternoon at Howard A. Okita Field

The Sharks (3-10, 0-2 PacWest) could not find the offensive spark they needed as the Eagles (12-5, 5-1 PacWest) pitching and defense held stout against a late push.

Game One
The Eagles got on the board first in the second inning with back-to-back hits scoring the first of three runs. Two batters later Raylene Ruvacalba drove in the second run on a single to center. Jennifer Morinishi also singled to the outfield for the final run before the Sharks got out of the bases-loaded jam down 3-0.

HPU found some barrels in the bottom of the fourth with Jewel Larson getting the team activated on a single through the right side. Hailey Yoshida followed her teammate up with a single of her own. Next to bat was Brandi Leong who dropped a sac bunt to move the runners over. Kanoe Tanigawa stepped in the box with RBIs on her mind and delivered a single to center field, scoring both runs and bringing the lead back to 3-2.

Both teams threatened multiple times the rest of the way but the Eagle's pitching and defense held the Shark attack at bay for a final 3-2.

Yoshida and Tanigawa collected a pair of hits in the contest while Tanigawa led the way with two RBIs.

Game Two
Pitching was the name of the game in game two with both pitchers going the distance with Taylor Thompson making her seventh start of the year for Hawaii Pacific.

After both teams threatened in multiple innings, the Eagles got the first run across in the top of the fifth. Two doubles down the left field line gave them the 1-0 lead.

The Eagles added one more insurance run in the sixth, while the Sharks minimized the damage by getting out of yet another bases-loaded jam.

Down 2-0 heading to the final frame Kanoe Tanigawa collected a double to begin the inning. Down to the last strike was Tiari Hernandez who roped a double down the line and breathed some life into the Sharks. Emily Wheat had Hernandez in scoring position and smoked a line drive at the third baseman who played it right and made the catch for the final out, thwarting the HPU last-chance comeback for a final 2-1 Biola victory.

The Sharks face Biola again tomorrow for another doubleheader slated for 1:00 p.m. HT
