Men's Basketball Wraps up Season with Intense Battle, Falling 88-86 to Eagles

LA MIRADA, Calif. – The Hawaii Pacific University men's basketball team traveled to La Mirada, California to take on Biola University inside Chase Gymnasium Saturday night. It went down to the wire, but HPU could not find the regular season finale victory, falling 88-86 to BU.

The Sharks (10-18, 6-14 PacWest) wrapped up their season, while the Eagles (17-10, 12-8 PacWest) will enter the PacWest postseason as the #5 seed.

Biola may have scored the first basket, but after senior Marquis Moore nailed a three-pointer, Hawaii Pacific went on multiple runs to a 21-13 lead. Moore hit another three to extend their lead to nine points, 36-27, with four minutes to go in the half. However, the final four minutes is where the Eagles shined, outscoring the Sharks 9-0 to tie the game up at 36-36 going into halftime.

Hawaii Pacific held onto a 52-51 lead six minutes into the second half. Over the next five minutes, they would go on a 13-7 run, highlighted by freshman Melo Sanchez hitting two long balls, as well as a couple of dunks by senior Trey Chapman and junior Maj Dusanic. However, the Eagles never gave up, hitting important three-pointers when it mattered. They tied the game up at 76-76 with 4:37 left on the clock. BU then hit a go-ahead layup with less than 30 seconds to go. HPU had a few opportunities, but did not capitalize on them. Moore hit one last three as Hawaii Pacific fell 88-86 to Biola.

Moore saved his best for last, finishing his collegiate career with a career-high 38 points. He hit all four of his three-pointers and all eight of his free throws. He also led the team in rebounds, bringing in seven.

Sanchez followed behind him in both categories with 23 points and six rebounds.

Finally, Chapman and Duscanic scored 13 and seven respectively.

That is all for the men's basketball team. They finish the regular season (10-18, 6-14 PacWest) and say goodbye to seniors Marquis Moore, Eli Russo, Elijah Martinez, Trey Miller, and Jalen Chandler
