Softball Unable to Overcome Biola, Falling Twice for 4-game Sweep

KANEOHE - The Hawaii Pacific University softball team were unable to overcome Biola University, dropping two more matches Tuesday afternoon at Howard A. Okita Field

The Sharks (3-12, 0-4 PacWest) will look for their first conference win against Concordia University Irvine over the weekend, while the Eagles (14-5, 7-1 PacWest) extend their winning streak to five games.

Game One

In the third inning, two out territory seemed to be where both teams strived. Three consecutive hits for Biola netted them three runs in the top of the third. Pitcher Gianba Kerschbaum was able to get out of the inning with two runners still on base.

Hawaii Pacific, looking to respond, did so in the bottom of the frame. Back-to-back walks by Hoku Ching and Kerschbaum, followed by a sacrifice bunt by Alexis Oshiro, put the Sharks in prime scoring position. However, a fielder's choice led to a two-out situation. Emily Wheat then came to the plate and slapped a ball up the middle, scoring two runs to cut HPU's deficit to a single run.

The bats went quiet for the next few innings, that was until the sixth inning. In the bottom of the sixth, Tiari Hernandez singled to left field. She then advanced to third off a sacrifice bunt and wild pitch. With one out to their name, Hawaii Pacific looked to capitalize on the scoring opportunity. Unfortunately, after a walk, two straight outs forced the end of the inning, with HPU still trailing 3-2.

The Eagles added an insurance run in the top of the seventh as the Sharks could not bring another run across the plate. Biola took game one 4-2 over Hawaii Pacific.

Hernandez, Wheat and Neva Poulin each earned a hit, while Wheat brought home HPU's two runs with a two RBI performance.

Game Two

Unlike the first three games of this series, after Biola found three runs in the first inning, Hawaii Pacific could not find the response they were used to finding.

There were a couple of chances with runners in scoring position in the fifth and sixth inning, but nothing that was capitalized on. The Eagles scored another triplet of runs in the top of the sixth to take the second game 6-0.

The Sharks are off until the weekend where they will face the Concordia University Irvine Golden Eagles for two double-headers. Their first matchup is on Saturday, March 4, with first pitch set for 12:00 p.m. HT at Howard A. Okita Field.
