Softball Drops Doubleheader to No. 17 Concordia

KANEOHE - The Hawaii Pacific Softball team dropped both games of their doubleheader with Concordia University Irvine Saturday afternoon at Howard A. Okita Softball Field.

The Sharks (3-14, 0-6 PacWest) are still in search of their first conference win and in the midst of a six game skid currently. The Golden Eagles (19-5, 9-1 PacWest) are looking to grab their third Hawaii trip series win tomorrow, having only dropped a single game to Chaminade in their roadtrip.

Game One
The first of the two games was dominated by CUI pitching with starter Daniela Alvarez only needing 41 pitches for five innings of work. The Concordia pitching staff also faced the minimum batters in the six inning run rule game thanks to a double-play after the only HPU hit in the game.

The Golden Eagles jumped on the Sharks early with two runs in the first and added another three in the fourth. Lastly, they got three across with two outs in the sixth and held HPU defensively to activate the run-rule.

Freshman pitcher Hailey Yoshida threw six innings and allowed eight runs on 11 hits.

Game Two
The second matchup was a different story with both teams scraping together hits, but it was the Golden Eagles who capitalized late to grab the win.

Both teams threatened across multiple innings, but for CUI they got two runners into scoring position in the sixth and finally found a gap and scored the only two runs of the ballgame.

HPU did not go down without a fight as they managed to load the bases in the bottom of the seventh with one out. A ground ball hit back to the pitcher almost turned into a double-play but was beaten out to give the Sharks one more chance. Concordia closer remained poised and got the final out.

Sophomore pitcher Taylor Thompson went seven innings with the only mistake coming in the sixth where she gave up the only two runs of the game, but she also added three more strikeouts in the contest.

The Sharks and Golden Eagles run it back tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. HT.
