Hawaii Pacific Stuns No. 11 Point Loma by Splitting First Double-Header

WAIPAHU - The Hawaii Pacific University baseball team hosted Point Loma Nazarene University for their first matchup of the season Saturday afternoon at Central Oahu Regional Park.

Point Loma entered today's contest as the No. 11 ranked team in the NCBWA Division II rankings.

The Sharks (9-11, 6-7 PacWest) bounced back from a 15-3 game one loss to stun the No. 11 Sea Lions (12-7, 3-3 PacWest) 5-0 in the second game.

Game One

Point Loma wasted no time getting themselves on the scoreboard, hitting a two-run home run three batters into the game. The Sea Lions added another run later in the inning, before scoring five more in the top of the second, and one more in the fourth.

Offensively, Hawaii Pacific only mustered up a single hit through three innings. That changed in the bottom half of the fourth. Senior Cole Kashimoto started it off with a single, sophomore Tejean Smith followed him up with a double. Junior Kota Suzuki then hit a single up the middle to score both runners. Still threatening with two outs, junior Chase Taylor smoked a single down the left field line to bring in Suzuki.

That would be the only inning the Sharks brought home runners. PLNU showed off their high ranking power as they took down HPU 15-3 in game one.

Kashimoto and Smith each found a pair of hits, while Smith and Taylor brought in the three runs.

Game Two

Entering the second game, Hawaii Pacific decided to start freshman Dylan Honda on the mound, a pitcher who has been a solid rock for them. Honda dominated his way through three innings, not allowing a single hit to a team that averages ten a game.

Hawaii Pacific applied pressure in the bottom of the second, scoring three runs in the process. Freshman Noah Hata cracked a double to center field. He then scored on a stolen base that led to an error. Junior Daniel Johnson then scored off of the bat of fellow junior Travis Johnson. To close the inning, senior Nicholas Jio singled in T. Johnson to give HPU an early 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, D. Johnson, Jio, and sophomore Tejean Smith each drew a walk, setting up a two out bases loaded situation. Junior Kota Suzuki, like he did in game one, earned a hit down the right field line, extending HPU's lead to 5-0.

After Honda put up a stellar three innings, junior pitcher Mac Leisher stepped in to fill his shoes. Leisher also went three innings, giving up three hits and striking out three batters. Finally, sophomore pitcher Ryan Inouye closed the game out in the seventh, shutting down the Sea Lions for the 5-0 upset victory.

T. Johnson and Jio led the Sharks in hitting, finishing with two hits each. Suzuki plated two batters, while T. Johnson and Jio both brought home one.

It was a collective effort, as Honda, Leisher, and Inouye held the No. 11 Sea Lions to four hits in a clean sheet effort.

The Sharks have tomorrow off before they battle with Point Loma once again on Monday, March 13. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. HT at Central Oahu Regional Park.
