Baseball Falters Late to Drop Series Against No. 11 Point Loma

WAIPAHU - The Hawaii Pacific University baseball team faltered late against Point Loma Nazarene University to lose series and both games of doubleheader on Monday at Central Oahu Regional Park.

The Sharks (9-13, 6-9 PacWest) and Sea Lions (13-7, 4-4) used up all the two-out magic they could scoring 12 runs in the situation across both games.

Game One
PLNU got on the board early with a two-out rally and a ball driven to the wall scored the first two runs of the game. The Sea Lions almost replicated this in the second this time with a two-out solo home run by Jakob Christian who leads the nation in home runs.

Point Loma struck again in the fifth inning after a few hits got them going again. Christian stepped in and drove in a pair of runners this time and extended the lead to 5-0.

The Sharks threatened multiple times with runners in scoring position, but would not get their first run until the sixth when a passed ball allowed Nicholas Jio to come home.

The Sea Lions had two-out mojo all game and in the top of the eighth, they strung together four hits and three runs for some added insurance.

HPU added a run in the ninth from the bat of Travis Johnson, but it was not enough for a comeback as game one ended 8-2.

Despite the run shortage, Johnson paced the Sharks with three hits and the only RBI of the game in his new lead-off role.

Game Two
Point Loma cruised out to an early 4-0 lead in the first after the first three batters reach base. A throwing error brought home the first pair of runs in the inning. With runners on back-to-back singles drove in two more.

HPU bounced back with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Jio led off with a single to right field and Cole Kashimoto took a pitch to the shoulder. Tejean Smith flew out deep enough to center to advance Jio to third which set up Travis Johnson to collect the first RBI of the game on a single to third base.

The Sharks shutdown Point Loma in the second inning and kept the offensive momentum going with Daniel Johnson singling through the left side. Noah Hata dropped down the sac bunt and D.J. Stephens placed a perfect bunt for a single. With Johnson on third Jio put a ball to the right side and cut the lead down to 4-2.

More two-out magic for the Sharks came in the bottom of the fourth inning with a pair of singles from Hata and Stephens. Jio stepped into the box and in a hitter's count and put one down the right-field line that rolled all the way to the wall for a two-RBI triple that tied the game 4-4.

With the theme of the day being two-out rallies, HPU found themselves in the situation again in the fifth where Frankie Peralez singled to right field, stole second, and had Daniel Johnson drive him in to take a 5-4 lead.

The Sharks were not done there as runners got aboard early in the sixth but with two outs, Tejean Smith smoked a single to right field after battling off eight pitches to add an insurance run with three outs left on defense.

The Sea Lions battled back in the top of the seventh with a lead-off single and hit-by-pitch. With no one out a single over second base cut the HPU lead to one. Another hit batter juiced the bases and a four-pitch walk tied the game up. In the next at-bat a deep fly ball was enough to get a sac fly and score the go-ahead and eventual winning run as Point Loma took game two 7-6.

Stephens paced the Sharks in game two with three hits and scored two runs, while Jio collected a trio of RBIs and pair of hits for himself.

Andrew Hauck got the nod and after a rocky first inning settled in and delivered five solid innings. Hauck collected four strikeouts while not giving up an earned run on seven hits in his outing.
