Baseball Takes One From Hilo Late in Game Two of Doubleheader

WAIPAHU - The Hawaii Pacific University baseball team split the doubleheader with the No. 22 UH Hilo on Saturday at Central Oahu Regional Park.

The Sharks (10-14, 6-9 PacWest) and Vulcans (16-7, 8-5 PacWest) will head to the rubber match tomorrow to decide the winner of their non-conference matchup.

Game One
Hilo got on the board first after a double with two-outs from Ryan Cho setting up the game's first run to be driven in on a single from Alec Yamauchi.

HPU bounced back in the third after disaster struck when a missed safety squeeze ended up with a caught stealing at second. Third baseman Frankie Peralez stepped in and remained calm as he slapped a single through the right side to tie the score 1-1 after two innings.

The Vulcans cashed in runs in the fourth with three base hits to load the bases. Leadoff hitter Casey Yamauchi pulled a pitch down the left-field line for a grand slam. Another runner reached base before a single to right center was misplayed allowing a fifth run to come across and advancing the runner to third. Next batter Blake Tweedt hit the second home run of the inning and extended the lead to 8-1.

Hilo added more run support in the fifth with four more runs on five hits going up 12-1.

HPU bounced back with one in the bottom of the frame from a D.J. Stephens single up the middle. They found more momentum in the bottom of the seventh loading the bases with no outs. Catcher Chase Taylor roped a double over the right fielder's head and scored a pair with no outs. Left fielder Adler Pierson grabbed an RBI on a sac fly. HPU kept the foot down as Nicholas Jio cranked his first tater of the year over left field and cut the lead down 12-8 headed to the eighth.

Hilo all but sealed the game in the top of the eighth with two more insurance runs.

HPU put the pressure on in the ninth as the first two batters reached base for Richard Higa who launched a no-doubter over right field and put the Sharks within striking distance at 14-11. Shortstop Tejean Smith stepped in to get the momentum going and gapped a double for another run, but that was the end of the run as Hilo took game one 14-12.

Game Two
The Vulcans jumped out to another early 2-0 lead in the first on an Alec Yamauichi double to left, but the Sharks minimized the damage by throwing one runner out at the plate. Tweedt added another RBI in the next at-bat.

UHH added three more in the top of the second as the team kept finding barrels against the Sharks. Ryan Cho had a two-RBI double and Cody Min collected one on a single to left to extend the lead to 5-0.

Hawaii Pacific bounced got one back in the bottom half of the inning. Higa started off with a single through the right side and Chase Taylor drew a walk to move him up. Stephens dug in and took a pitch the other way and got the Sharks in the run column, but Hilo led 5-1 after two.

It was not until the fourth we saw more action when the Sharks had the bases juiced for Kota Suzuki who continued to be the most consistent bat for HPU and took a pitch the other way for a two-run single. The inning came to an abrupt end with Jio getting picked off at third when he left early to get a good jump, nevertheless the lead was cut to 5-4.

The Sharks needed some late-game heroics if they were going to take game two and Stephens got the party started with a perfect bunt down third base for a hit. A wild pitch moved him over and set up pinch hitter Noah Hata for an RBI single and tied the game at 5-5. Hata advanced on another wild pitch and was moved to third on a fly ball to right field. "Mr. Consistent" Kota Suzuki did was he does best and found a barrel right back up the middle that ricocheted off the pitcher and scored the run from third to gain a 6-5 lead headed into the seventh.

With three outs left to secure a win, Ryan Inouye came on and shut the door earning the win with two strikeouts and a flyout.

Suzuki led the way with three RBIs and two hits most clutch of all coming in the seventh to give HPU the lead and eventual win.

Up Next
HPU and UH Hilo return tomorrow for a rubber match with the first pitch slated for noon.
