Stellar Year for Women's Basketball Ends in First Round of PacWest Tournament

HONOLULU - The Hawaii Pacific University women's basketball team fell in first round of the PacWest Conference tournament 55-48 to Concordia inside the McCabe Gymnasium Thursday afternoon.

The Sharks ended a stellar bounce-back year with an appearance in the conference tournament and multiple player awards.

Senior center Abby Spurgin picked up where she left off in the regular season as the conference leading scorer as she earned the first eight points of the game for HPU. The first quarter was highlighted by each teams defense with Hawaii Pacific leading the rebounding and block categories. With time winding down in the first junior forward Kalina Obrey converted one-of-two free throws and a layup which gave the Sharks a 13-12 lead after one.

The second quarter was less efficient for both teams as they scored a combined 14 points as the Golden Eagles went into the halftime locker room with a 20-19 lead. It was HPU's second lowest scoring half of the season at 19 points.

The third quarter turned around for both teams each shooting their best percentages of the game. Small differences in free throws and the games first made three pointer led to a four-point Concorida lead, the largest of the game.

The Golden Eagles seemed to have the momentum going into the fourth quarter and extended the lead 40-33, but the Sharks stayed in and battled back going on an 8-3 run to retake the lead. Having exchanged the lead a few more times Concordia guard Jasmine Rachel found a corner three that felt like it put the game away.

The Sharks were relentless as guard Hailey Masaki willed her way to the free throw line making a pair of clutch free throws. With under a minute remaining HPU made a huge defensive stop and were able to get Spurgin to the line where she made one-of-two cutting the lead to three. The Sharks elected to foul on the inbound where CUI made both free throws and put the game on ice 55-48.

Hawaii Pacific led the Golden Eagles in field goal percentage, rebounds, steals, but were 0-11 from three to CUI's 3-14 which would make the difference in the end.

Spurgin picked up her final career double-double with a team-high 19 points and 10 rebounds. Masaki was the other scorer in double-figures for HPU.
