Softball Splits Series with Urban Knights

BRISBANE, Calif. - The Hawaii Pacific University softball wrapped up their series against the Academy of Art University Saturday afternoon at Mission Blue Field.

The Sharks (15-20, 10-10 PacWest) set a season high for hits in the first game, but ultimately split the series with the Urban Knights (5-23, 2-10 PacWest).

Game One

After threatening to score in the top of the second, Hawaii Pacific finally broke through in the third. With one out on the inning, Tiari Hernandez doubled into the left center gap. An error by the shortstop would allow Brandi Leong to reach second base, putting two runners in scoring position for HPU. Tita Saunders, who has been swinging hot as of late, hit a single to score Hernandez.

Continuing into the inning, the Sharks were now in their favorite spot, a two out scenario. Kanoe Tanigawa, Jewel Larson, Neva Poulin, and Savanna Salyer-Kovacs connected on four consecutive hits to pile on five more runs. One final run would be added off of a misplay, as the Sharks put up a seven spot in the third inning.

The Urban Knights were held hitless through four innings. In the fifth, they used an error and a couple of hits to steal away three runs.

Hawaii Pacific wasted no time in responding in the next half inning. Back-to-back-to-back singles by Leong, Saunders, and Hailey Yoshida netted HPU a run. A soft groundout to the left side by Tanigawa scored Saunders in the next at bat. Larson topped it all off by pushing a triple down the right field line, reclaiming the seven run lead.

Both teams looked like they were going to put up more runs in the seventh, but ultimately, Hawaii Pacific took the first game 10-3.

HPU saw the ball like a beach ball today, posting a season-high 17 hits as a team in the first game.

Saunders, Yoshida, and Larson were extremely proficient, grabbing three hits each. Tanigawa followed just behind with two hits to her name. Speaking of Tanigawa, she, alongside Larson and Salyer-Kovacs, combined for seven RBIs.

In the circle, Yoshida gave up two earned runs on four hits. She also added four strikeouts to her season total.

Game Two

Much like the second game yesterday, it was the Academy of Art that came out swinging. Three hits, a pair of walks, and an error would help the Urban Knights plate three runs in the bottom of the first. A triple and a sacrifice fly in the second extended their lead to four runs.

Hawaii Pacific's offense started to heat up in the fifth. Hoku Ching began the inning by drawing a walk. Next, Alexis Oshiro took the first pitch she saw and was able to get an infield single. Then came Tiari Hernandez, who smoked the ball into the right center gap, scoring both Ching and Oshiro, cutting the deficit to two runs.

On their last breath, two crucial mistakes by the Urban Knights' defense allowed the Sharks to tie the game. Oshiro and Hernandez used their speed to capitalize on the errors. Taylor Thompson held the ART U offense to force extra innings.

In the top of the eighth, Kanoe Tanigawa slapped a single up the middle. Kaylyn Dosch was then called upon to run for Tanigawa. Dosch advanced 60 feet on a wild pitch, before she moved to third on a sac bunt by Jewel Larson. With one out, Savanna Salyer-Kovacs snuck a single through the left side of the infield to score Dosch.

Moving on to the bottom half of the frame, the first batter for the Academy of Art laced a triple into the left center gap. Thompson dug deep to strike the next two batters out. Unfortunately, three consecutive hits for the Urban Knights allowed them to walk the game off in the eighth inning, winning 6-5.

Leong and Saunders led the way in the hits category with a pair of hits each. Meanwhile, Hernandez plated two runs for the Sharks.

Thompson came in as a reliever in the third inning. She went five and two-third innings. She gave up two runs and struck out a whopping eight batters.

Up Next

The Sharks will finally get a day of rest before they head to Hayward, California to take on the Holy Names University Hawks. First pitch is on Monday, March 27, with start time around 12:00 p.m. PST at Chabot College Softball Field.
