Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Falls in Two Close Games in Day One of Tournament of Champions

TURLOCK, Calif. - The Hawaii Pacific University softball team opened up their Tournament of Champions play against Central Washington University and California State University Monterey Bay Friday afternoon in Turlock, California.

The Sharks (17-24, 12-12 PacWest) fell in game one 2-0 to the Wildcats (15-14, 4-4 GNAC), before falling 2-1 in extra innings to the Otters (20-14, 12-8 CCAA).

Game One

It was a pitchers duel to start the first game. Gianna Kerschbaum was called upon for Hawaii Pacific and was dealing through the first four innings. Unfortunately it would be Central Washington to break the scoreless seal in the fifth. A big double to the left center gap by Allie Thiessen brought home a pair of runs for the Wildcats.

The Sharks had a few scoring opportunities in the fifth, sixth, and seventh inning, but nothing came to fruition. The one big double proved to be the difference as CWU took the game 2-0.

Kanoe Tanigawa and Hoku Ching were the hitting duo in the first game, collecting a couple of hits each.

Even in the fifth inning, Kerschbaum was close to keeping the game scoreless. Nonetheless, she went six innings, striking out seven batters in the process and giving up two earned runs.

Game Two

California State pressured early with three straight hits to load the bases with no outs in the second inning. Pitcher Taylor Thompson was able to escape the inning only giving up a single run.

Offensively, Hawaii Pacific was held to a single hit in the first three innings. But in the fourth, Tita Saunders drew a walk, followed by back-to-back singles from Hailey Yoshida and Kanoe Tanigawa. Tanigawa's hit was deep enough to bring Saunders home from second base to tie the game up.

Beside their own hiccups, both pitchers were very efficient in the circle, pitching their way to extra innings at a 1-1 game.

Unfortunately for Hawaii Pacific, their track record with extra innings has not been the best this season. With no outs, the Otters had two runners in scoring position. A groundout brought home the game winning run as CSUMB took the 2-1 victory over HPU.

Brandi Leong, Yoshida, and Tanigawa each found a hit in the game, with Tanigawa bringing in the lone run.

Thompson gave up one earned run, striking out three batters over her seven innings of work.
