Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Falls Twice in Day 2 of Tournament of Champions

TURLOCK, Calif. - The Hawaii Pacific University softball team resumed their Tournament of Champions play Saturday afternoon. They took on Northwest Nazarene University and Cal Poly Humboldt at the Pedretti Sports Complex.

The Sharks (17-26, 12-12 PacWest) battled in game one, falling 2-1 to the Nighthawks (19-13, 7-1 GNAC), before falling 6-2 to the Lumberjacks (14-18, 3-11 CCAA) later in the day.

Game One

Hawaii Pacific started the scoring in the second inning. Hailey Yoshida led off with a double down the left field line. After surrendering an out, Hoku Ching drew a walk to add more pressure. Neva Poulin then came up and slapped a single down the middle, scoring Yoshida.

Northwest Nazarene responded quickly in the following innings. In the third, Abigail Gagnon brought in the tying run. Then in the fourth, Tori Hensley singled in the second run to take the lead.

The Sharks had some base runners in the third and sixth, however, they could not get any more runs across the board. HPU once again fell by a single run 2-1 to NNU.

Kanoe Tanigawa led the way with a pair of hits, while Poulin brought in the lone run for the Sharks.

Yoshida pitched a solid game, going seven innings, striking out three batters, and giving up two earned runs.

Game Two

Tiari Hernandez got on base early, finding a single to right field. Brandi Leong moved her to second with a sac bunt, before Hailey Yoshida hit a single to left field to score Hernandez.

As if the name did not fit them enough, the Lumberjacks got some key hits to take the lead 2-1. The first inning looked like it was going to end with just that damage, but a misplay allowed another pair of runs to score. Humboldt scored one more in the second to extend their lead to 5-1.

Heading to the fourth, HPU went on to score their second run of the game. Yoshida pushed a single through the right side. An error by the Lumberjack's shortstop helped Yoshida to cross home plate.

Unfortunately for Hawaii Pacific, that was all they had left. A sixth run came through for Humboldt in the bottom of the fourth. The Sharks did load the bases in the fifth, but could not capitalize with any more runs. The last three innings came and went as HUM beat HPU 6-2 to close the day.

Hernandez and Yoshida both collected a couple of hits, while Yoshida plated one run.

Taylor Thompson came in as a reliever and went five innings, only giving up two hits and one run. She also struck out four batters in the process.

Up Next

The Sharks have one final game in the Tournament of Champions as they battle with Sonoma State University tomorrow, April 2. First pitch is set for 7:00 a.m. PST at Pedretti Sports Complex Field #2.
