Thompson's Stellar Pitching Performance Helps Softball Split Second Double-Header with No.17 Concordia

KANEOHE - The Hawaii Pacific Softball team split their second double-header with Concordia University Irvine Sunday afternoon at Howard A. Okita Softball Field.

The Sharks (4-15, 1-7 PacWest) take their first conference victory of the season off a phenomenal pitching performance by sophomore pitcher Taylor Thompson. The Golden Eagles (20-6, 10-2 PacWest) take the series 3-1, winning all three of their series against Hawaii based teams.

Game One

Looking for their first run of the series, Hawaii Pacific found an opportunity in the bottom of the second. Freshman Hailey Yoshida led off the inning and battled to a full count, fouling off four pitches in the process, eventually drawing a 10-pitch walk. Senior Brandi Leong then took to the plate, and with the count once again full, Leong shot a double into the left field. Yoshida crossed home plate to give the Sharks their first run and lead of the series.

Freshman pitcher Gianna Kerschbaum held a hot hitting Golden Eagles team to a single hit through the first three innings. However, the hitting drought did not last long. Concordia proved the power of a nationally ranked team in the next couple of innings, scoring two in the fourth and six in the fifth.

The Sharks threatened more runs a couple of innings, but could not get another run across the plate as Concordia took game one 8-1.

Leong, Yoshida, Kanoe Tanigawa, Kaylyn Dosch, and Tita Saunders each earned a hit, while Leong brought in the lone run.

Kerschbaum got the start in the circle, going four and a third innings, giving up six earned runs, and adding four strikeouts to her season total.

Game Two

Hawaii Pacific wasted no time getting into the second game, once again finding the first run. Sophomore Tiari Hernandez earned a walk, before freshman Emily Wheat bunted for a single. Senior Tita Saunders then advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt, and a wild pitch would allow Hernandez to cross the plate.

Then in the bottom of the fourth, Saunders smoked a triple into right field to give HPU another scoring chance. Senior Kanoe Tanigawa followed her by hitting the second pitch she saw toward left field, scoring Saunders.

Meanwhile, a no-hitter was brewing in the circle, as sophomore pitcher Taylor Thompson held the Golden Eagles to no hits through the first six innings. Unfortunately, the no-hit bid would be broken up in the seventh. Yet, Thompson stood strong, shutting out the No. 17 ranked Concordia University Irvine for a 2-0 HPU victory.

Tanigawa led the way with two hits and a RBI. Meanwhile, Saunders, Hernandez, Hailey Yoshida, and Jewel Larson each earned a base hit.

Thompson earned her first win of the season, holding the Golden Eagles to two hits, all while striking out four.

The Sharks will now prepare for a single double-header against the Baldwin Wallace University Yellow Jackets. They are set to square off on Tuesday, March 7, with first pitch slated for 1:00 p.m. HT at Howard Okita Field.
