A Tale of Two Games as Softball Splits Double-Header with Yellowjackets

KANEOHE - The Hawaii Pacific Softball team hosted a non-conference double-header against Baldwin Wallace University Wednesday afternoon at Howard Okita Field.

The Sharks (5-16) and the Yellowjackets (2-3) split the series. BW took the first game in extra innings 3-2, before the offensive firepower of HPU exploded for a shortened second game via the run-ahead rule.

Game One

Both offenses were held quiet through the first three innings. But in the top of the fourth, three straight singles for Baldwin Wallace gave them the first run of the game. Later on in the fifth inning, a couple of singles and a sacrifice fly would net the Yellowjackets a second run.

Hawaii Pacific's offense on the other hand was producing base runners in every inning, but could not get anyone across the plate, that was until the fifth inning. A gift was handed as sophomore Tiari Hernandez reached first base on an error by BW's shortstop. Freshman Emily Wheat then lofted a ball into shallow right field. A diving attempt was made but it was just off the tip of a Yellowjacket player's glove. The ball bounced down the foul line, scoring Hernandez for HPU's first run.

Entering the bottom half of the seventh inning, Hawaii Pacific still found themselves trailing by a run. Three pitches later, they would be down to their final out. Freshman Hailey Yoshida drew a walk, setting up sophomore Jewel Larson. Larson then jumped on the first pitch she saw and drove it into the left center gap, allowing Yoshida to round the bases to tie the game up.

Extra innings was now on the cards, meaning that each team automatically got a runner on second base. An uncharacteristic mistake saw a routine popup to the catcher turn into a third run for the Yellowjackets.

Once again, HPU was trying to tie the game up. Unfortunately, a good defensive play by Baldwin Wallace's shortstop would stop the tying run from crossing the plate. BW took the first game 3-2 over HPU.

Senior Brandi Leong led the way with a pair of hits. Meanwhile, Wheat and Larson drove in the two runs for the Sharks.

Sophomore Taylor Thompson had the start in the circle. She gave up two runs, but struck at five batters. Yoshida replaced her in the sixth, only allowing two hits through her three innings of work.

Game Two

Usually fireworks are saved for late at night, however, Hawaii Pacific's bats wasted no time popping into the game. With two outs to their name in the first inning, five straight players reached on base for the Sharks. Senior Tita Saunders started it with a four pitch walk. Then fellow senior Kanoe Tanigawa, freshman Hailey Yoshida, sophomore Jewel Larson, and junior Hoku Ching each hit a single to score a total of four runs.

In the bottom of the second, back-to-back walks by freshman Alexis Oshiro and sophomore Tiari Hernandez threatened more runs for HPU. Saunders took the plate and smoked a ball into the left-center gap to extend Hawaii Pacific's lead to six runs.

The Yellowjackets were able to get a couple of runs in the top of the third, using four walks and a base hit to cut their deficit down to 6-2.

However, the Sharks were not done scoring as senior Brandi Leong and Saunders each batted in a run in the third.

Then in the fourth, it became a pitch hitting party. The game saw the likes of sophomore pitcher Taylor Thompson get a first at bat of the season, drawing a five pitch walk. Meanwhile, Ching and Hernandez added more RBIs to their stat line. Finally, freshman Jenasis Guerrero got her long awaited first hit of her collegiate career, cracking a double into the left-center gap for two RBIs.

The fourth inning established the run-ahead rule, as the Sharks took the second game 12-2 after four and a half innings of play.

Hernandez, Saunders, Larson, Ching, and Oshiro each collected two base hits apiece. Saunders and Ching drove in three runs, while Guerrero brought in two.

Freshman pitcher Gianna Kerschbaum got the start in the circle. Despite having a rough patch in the second inning, she was able to earn the win, striking out two in the process. Freshman pitcher Hailey Yoshida filled in for a few innings, only giving up a single hit.

The Sharks have a quick turnaround as they host the Azusa Pacific University Cougars for two PacWest conference double-headers starting tomorrow, March 9. First pitch of game one is set for 1:00 p.m. HT at Howard Okita Field.
