Baseball Drops First Double-Header Against Azusa

WAIPAHU - The Hawaii Pacific University baseball team hosted Azusa Pacific University for their first double-header of the season Monday afternoon at Central Oahu Regional Park.

The Sharks (8-8, 5-4 PacWest) and the Cougars (9-7, 2-0 PacWest) will battle each other once more tomorrow. HPU will look to break their cold streak, while APU will look for the series win.

Game One

While Hawaii Pacific's offense was kept mostly quiet through the first three innings,  Azusa Pacific continuously knocked on the door. However, junior pitcher Jack O'Brien never succumbed to the pressure. The top of fourth is when the scoreless seal was broken, as the Cougars used a couple of free bases and hits to snag a 4-0 lead.

HPU just could not get it going offensively, meanwhile, APU added four runs in the sixth, a pair of runs in the seventh, and one more in  the ninth to take the first game 11-0.

Graduate Richard Higa, juniors Kota Suzuki and Jonathan Lucio, and freshmen Noah Hata each earned themselves a hit. Out of the bullpen, senior Shane Adams pitched a scoreless fifth inning.

Game Two

While it took some time for the scoring to start in the first game, both teams wasted no time in the second. A couple of hits and a stolen base helped Azusa Pacific net the first run of the game in the top of the first.

In the bottom half of the frame, senior Nicholas Jio slapped a single to right-field. Freshman Noah Hata followed him up with his own single through the right side, advancing Jio to third. Junior Kota Suzuki then sent a deep enough ball to score Jio for Hawaii Pacific's first run of the series.

The Cougars found a second run in the third, but so did the Sharks. Three straight players reaching base setup senior D.J. Stephens, who brought in Suzuki on a single to right-field.

However, Azusa Pacific continued to score, with no answer this time from Hawaii Pacific An explosive sixth inning for the Cougars saw them take a 13-2 lead.

HPU would put up a respectable 4-spot in the seventh. Suzuki, Stephens, junior Chase Taylor and freshman Frankie Peralez all found base hits to bring home a runner. However, the damage was already done, with HPU falling 13-6 in game two.

Despite the loss, the Sharks outhit the Cougars 13-12, with five batters grabbing two base hits each. Suzuki and Stephens led the team with two RBIs apiece.

On the mound, freshman Jett Ah Sam pitched a shutout seventh inning, striking out one in the process.

The Sharks are back at it again tomorrow, March 7, for their second double-header with Azusa Pacific. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. HT at Central Oahu Regional Park.
