Baseball Battles, but Falls to Cougars

WAIPAHU - The Hawaii Pacific University baseball team concluded their four game series with Azusa Pacific University Tuesday afternoon at Central Oahu Regional Park.

The Sharks (8-10, 5-6 PacWest) will look to bounce back against Point Loma on the weekend, while the Cougars (11-7, 4-0 PacWest) will look to keep their perfect conference record going against UH Hilo.

Game One

Like the two games yesterday, Azusa Pacific got themselves on the board first. Looking to respond, junior Travis Johnson opened the bottom of the second with a double down the left field line. Fellow junior Chase Taylor later drew a walk, before both batters advanced bases on a groundout. With two outs, freshman Frankie Peralez entered the batters box. Peralez took the second pitch he saw for a single and an error by the shortstop would allow Taylor to cross home plate alongside Johnson, giving the Sharks a 2-1 lead.

The Cougars retook the lead with a pair of runs in the third, and added three more in the fifth inning. Hawaii Pacific had a chance to score some runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth, as they had bases loaded on three hits. However, they were already in a two out situation and could not get another hit on the board.

An error would be the demise for HPU as APU capitalized with a five spot in the top of the eighth for Azusa extended their lead to nine runs. The Sharks did add a pair of runs in the bottom half of the eighth frame. Sophomore Tejean Smith scored on a passed ball, while Taylor grounded out to bring in Johnson. The Cougars scored one more time to take the first game 12-4 over Hawaii Pacific.

Johnson and Peralez led the way with two hits apiece. Peralez led the way with two RBIs, while Johnson crossed home plate twice.

Game Two

Azusa Pacific pounded the scoreboard early once again, finding four runs in the first three innings. In the bottom of the third, Hawaii Pacific used four straight hits to get two of those runs back. Senior Richard Higa and junior Haydon Huff got themselves aboard, then advanced bases on a passed ball. Senior Nicholas Jio would score Higa, while freshman Noah Hata scored Huff.

The Cougars then scored on a wild pitch in the fourth to bring their lead back to three runs. The Sharks responded again, this time in the fifth. Hata got back on base, and junior Travis Johnson brought him in with a single to center field. Unfortunately, Hawaii Pacific were not able to get another hit in the final two innings, as they fell 5-3 to APU.

Hata and Huff each collected a pair of hits, while Hata, Johnson, and Jio brought in the runs.

On the mound, Johnson and sophomore Ryan Schuelke both pitched a shutout inning.

The Sharks are off for four days where they will host Point Loma Nazarene University for a PacWest conference matchup. The first double-header is scheduled for Saturday, March 11, with first pitch at 2:00 p.m. HT at Central Oahu Regional Park.
