Sharks Fall 3-0 to #13 Sonoma State in Final Day of Tournament of Champions

TURLOCK, Calif. - The Hawaii Pacific University softball team concluded play in the Tournament of Champions Sunday morning, battling #13 Sonoma State University at the Pedretti Sports Complex.

The Sharks (17-27, 12-12 PacWest) ran into one of the strongest pitchers for the Seawolves (25-6, 16-3 CCAA), falling 3-0 in their final game in California.

Game One

Great defensive plays by catcher Savanna Salyer-Kovacs and shortstop Hailey Yoshida in the first two innings helped Hawaii Pacific keep the game scoreless. From there, pitcher Gianna Kerschbaum held her ground through four innings. Unfortunately, Sonoma State finally broke through in the fifth inning, off of a Giana Hays two-run home run. A third run would be added on two extra-base hits in the sixth.

Meanwhile on the offensive side of the ball, the Sharks were up for a big task. They were going up against pitcher Charlie Johnson, who has only let up two earned runs over 53+ innings of work.

HPU got hits and baserunners, but the strong pitching from Johnson shut out any possible opportunities of earning some runs. Hawaii Pacific fell 3-0 to Sonoma State in their final matchup of the Tournament of Champions.

Seven Sharks earned a hit in the matchup, while Jewel Larson and Kaylyn Dosch each drew a walk.

Kerschbaum and Taylor Thompson gave up three earned runs, but struck out five batters in the process.

Up Next

That is all for California as the Sharks will come back to the islands to wrap up the regular season. Up first is a PacWest conference double-header at home against Chaminade University on Saturday, April 8. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m. HST at Howard A. Okita Field.
