Baseball Drops Double-Header Against Hilo

HILO, Hawai'i - The Hawaii Pacific University baseball team battled in a double-header against the University of Hawaii-Hilo Saturday afternoon at Francis Wong Stadium.

The Sharks (17-25, 12-17 PacWest) were unable to overcome their island rivals, as the Vulcans (23-16, 13-14 PacWest) took both games of the double-header.

Game One

Hilo pounced early, using nine hits in the first three innings to take a 7-0 lead. Meanwhile for Hawaii Pacific, they could only find a single hit through five frames.

However, just like the game yesterday, the Sharks ignited a flame in the top of the sixth once more. Haydon Huff led off the inning with a double down the right field line. Kota Suzuki then shot a single up the middle to bring home Huff. After a pitching chance, Nicholas Jio slapped a single to left field, before both of them moved up 90 feet on a Frankie Peralez sac bunt.

Continuing into the inning, three consecutive singles by Richard Higa, D.J. Stephens, and Ian Wolski plated three more runs. Finally, back-to-back free passes by Noah Hata and Cole Kashimoto scored a fifth run.

The Vulcans responded in the bottom half of the sixth frame. With a runner on base, two walks and a hit batter allowed UHH to reclaim a run. Since it was a seven inning game, Hawaii Pacific had one last chance to tie the game up. They had multiple runners on base, but fell 8-5 to Hilo in the first game.

Suzuki and Higa led the way with a pair of hits each. Meanwhile, Higa had a team leading two RBIs, with Huff, Wolski, and Suzuki bringing in the other three runs.

Pitchers Shea Lake and Ryan Inouye combined for 4.2 innings of work. They gave up three hits, an earned run each, and struck out three batters.

Game Two

Once again Hilo got the scoring rolling first in the second inning. Three extra base hits and a pair of walks resulted in a quick 4-0 lead for the Vulcans.

Hawaii Pacific chipped into their deficit in the following half inning. Kota Suzuki got on base with a double, before Tejean Smith scorched a single up the middle to bring Noah Hata, who came in to pinch run for Suzuki, home.

However, UHH's relentless offensive pressure started to overwhelm the HPU pitching staff. Four more runs in the fourth and fifth inning saw Hilo jump to an 8-1 lead.

The Sharks just could not get much going on the bats. A second run was scored in the seventh when Hata and Nicholas Jio drew back-to–back walks. D.J. Stephens stepped into the batter's box and earned a single to the shortstop, scoring Hata in the process.

But the gap was too big, with the Vulcans even adding a couple of runs in the final few innings to take game two 10-2 over HPU.

Seven Sharks earned a hit in the second game, with Stephens and Smith being the ones to drive in runs. Hata had to run today, crossing the plate for both of HPU's runs. Meanwhile, the pitching staff for Hawaii Pacific struck out five batters.

Up Next
