Baseball Falls to Hilo in Tightly Contested Match

HILO - The Hawaii Pacific University baseball team finished their final road series of the season Sunday afternoon with one last game at Francis Wong Stadium against the University of Hawaii-Hilo.

The Sharks (17-26, 12-17 PacWest) kept in close, but a strong eighth inning propelled the Vulcans (24-16, 13-14 PacWest) to an 8-4 victory.

Hawaii Pacific decided it was time to flip the script, putting themselves on the scoreboard first in the first frame. With two outs, Richard Higa and Ian Wolski got themselves on base. D.J. Stephens then cranked a single up the middle to bring home Higa.

Moving into the third, Kota Suzuki and Nicholas Jio led the inning off with back-to-back singles. A passed ball and a wild pitch allowed Suzuki to score a second run for the Sharks.

Wanting to get themselves into the game, Hilo used some two out magic in the bottom of the third. A walk, three hits and a hit-by-pitch saw the Vulcans not only tie the game, but take the lead in the process at 3-2.

But once again, two outs seemed to be the comfort zone for these teams. In the following half inning, HPU had Noah Hata on base with two outs on the board. Three consecutive singles by Frankie Peralez, Suzuki, and Jio helped Hawaii Pacific reclaim the lead.

UHH tied the game up at 4-4 in the fifth as Casey Yamauchi came around to score on a passed ball.

The game came to a stalemate, with neither side putting on any runs in the next two innings. Unfortunately, it would be the Vulcans to snap the cold spree in the eighth. Solid hitting and baserunning allowed Hilo to jump ahead 8-4. The Sharks were unable to tie the game in the ninth as they fell victim to the 4-game sweep.

Suzuki continued to shine offensively for the Sharks, finishing the game with a team leading three hits. Jio, Stephens, and Hata followed behind him with a pair of hits of their own. Suzuki, Jio, and Stephens were responsible for an RBI each.
