Baseball Drops Non-Conference Game Against Chico State 6-1

CHICO, Calif. - The Hawaii Pacific University baseball team took a quick trip to Chico, California to take on Chico State for a single game series Monday afternoon at Nettleton Stadium.

The Sharks (10-20, 6-13 PacWest) fell to the Wildcats (15-10, 9-6 CCAA) in a non-conference matchup 6-1.

Chico State made use of a grand opportunity in the bottom of the third inning. With one out and bases loaded, Cameron Mahaffy took the first pitch he saw over the left field wall for a grand slam. Another run in the inning gave the Wildcats an early 5-0 lead.

In the following half inning, Hawaii Pacific had the chance to regain some ground. Tejean Smith and Richard Higa connected on back-to-back singles to put some runners on base. Unfortunately, a double play halted any momentum the Sharks had.

A fielding error in the bottom of the sixth allowed CSUC to earn another run.

Offensively, HPU were finding the hits, but not the runs. Not wanting to be shut out however, Hawaii Pacific found their run in the ninth. Higa opened the inning with a single. Two outs later, Ian Wolski landed another single to center field. With pinch runner Noah Hata coming in for Higa, there was some speed on second base. Frankie Peralez squeezed a single up the middle to score the speedy Hata. But that was all the damage that could be done, as the Sharks fell to the Wildcats 6-1.

Wolski, Smith, and Higa combined for seven of HPU's eight hits. Meanwhile, Peralez plated the lone run.

On the mound, Andrew Hauck, Jack O'Brien, Eddie Lee, and Makana Quia each pitched an inning as a reliever. They gave up no earned runs, allowed one hit, and struck out four batters.
