HPU Falls to Point Loma In Overtime

Melo Sanchez scores 27 points in the loss.

Honolulu, Hawai'i - In a thrilling battle of PacWest powerhouses at the Shark Tank, the Hawai'i Pacific University (HPU) men's basketball team suffered a heart-wrenching 75-78 overtime loss to the Point Loma Sea Lions. The matchup, pitting two of the top-three teams in the conference against each other, lived up to its billing, delivering a spectacle of high-intensity hoops.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams exchanging blows in a quest for supremacy. Point Loma managed to secure a slim advantage heading into the break, and it was the scoring prowess of HPU's Melo Sanchez, who contributed 10 points in the opening half, that kept the Sharks in the thick of the contest.

The second half saw the Sharks seize control, with Charlie Weber leading the charge as they built a six-point advantage. Weber, on his way to extending his impressive streak of ten consecutive double-digit games, showcased his scoring prowess, knocking down a pair of clutch free throws that further solidified HPU's lead.

As the Sharks looked poised to secure a statement victory, the Sea Lions mounted a spirited comeback. Wynton Brown's layup with just 38 seconds remaining tied the game, setting the stage for a frantic finish to regulation. Despite both teams having opportunities to seal the win in the waning moments, neither could capitalize, and the contest spilled into overtime.

In overtime, both teams found themselves at a deadlock, setting the stage for a nail-biting overtime period. The intensity only heightened as the seconds ticked away, and double overtime seemed inevitable. However, Point Loma had other plans.

In the dying moments of the extra period, Point Loma managed to force multiple trips to the free-throw line, building a three-point advantage. With the game hanging in the balance, the Sharks had a mere two seconds to execute a play that would extend the contest. Despite a valiant effort, the last-second basket attempt fell short, sealing the victory for Point Loma.

Melo Sanchez, a standout for the Sharks, showcased his scoring prowess once again, finishing the game with his fourth 20-point performance of the season. Sanchez not only led the team in scoring but also contributed significantly on the boards, securing seven rebounds.

Josh Niusulu, another key contributor for HPU, played an essential role in the team's efforts. As the Sharks battled fiercely in a game that saw both teams leaving everything on the court, Niusulu's contributions were vital in keeping the contest competitive.

As the team reflects on the narrow defeat, the focus shifts to the road ahead and the challenges that await in Central California.

The journey to Fresno Pacific and Westmont presents an opportunity for HPU to bounce back and reaffirm their position among the top contenders in the PacWest Conference. The lessons learned from the battle against Point Loma will undoubtedly shape the team's approach as they look to make a statement on the road.
