Hilo Edges Out Hawaii Pacific in a Tight 1-0 Contest

Hilo, HI – Hawaii Pacific University (HPU) continued to battle in their young season but couldn't break through against Hawaii Hilo, falling 1-0 at Vulcan Soccer Field on September 11, 2024. Despite strong defensive efforts and an aggressive approach, HPU remains winless with a 0-2-0 record.

First Half: HPU found themselves trailing early when Hawaii Hilo's Gabriel Gallardo netted a goal in the 8th minute off a deflected header, assisted by Felix Drizinsky. Though the Sharks tried to respond, they were met with strong resistance from Hilo's backline.

The intensity of the match was evident with several players receiving yellow cards. HPU's Tyson Norr and Jude Boyd were both cautioned before halftime, highlighting the physical play as the Sharks tried to break down Hilo's defense.

Second Half: HPU came out aggressively in the second half, pushing to level the score. However, despite their efforts, they couldn't find the equalizer. Midfielder Dylan Barreria was booked in the 70th minute as the frustration began to mount for the Sharks.

As the match wore on, HPU continued to press, but key moments from goalkeeper Kevin Harr and forward Shota Fukunishi were not enough to turn the tide. Both players received yellow cards in the closing minutes, further demonstrating HPU's gritty performance despite the result.

Key Players for HPU:

  • Kevin Harr: Put in a determined performance in goal, making key saves to keep HPU within striking distance.
  • Shota Fukunishi: Battled throughout the match, contributing to HPU's push for an equalizer in the second half.
  • Dylan Barreria: Fought hard in the midfield but was unable to help spark the offensive breakthrough.

HPU fought valiantly but couldn't find the back of the net, falling to 0-2-0 on the season. As they regroup for their next match, the Sharks will aim to sharpen their attack and capitalize on their chances moving forward.
