HONOLULU — Hawaii Pacific University showed flashes of its depth and offensive balance, but Westmont pulled away in the second half to secure an 88–69 victory Thursday night at the HPU Shark Tank.
The Sharks (11–5, 7–4 PacWest) stayed within striking distance early, shooting 60 percent from the field in the first half and trailing just 46–39 at the break. HPU matched Westmont basket for basket through much of the opening period, highlighted by efficient interior scoring and timely perimeter shots.
Quentin Meza led HPU with 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including 3-of-6 from beyond the arc, while
Joshua West added 15 points and four rebounds.
Josh Niusulu chipped in nine points and three rebounds, and
Nemanja Sarenac provided a spark off the bench with nine points on three made 3-pointers.
HPU's offense remained competitive in the second half, but Westmont extended its lead behind efficient shooting and second-chance opportunities. The Warriors shot 55.2 percent from the field for the game and connected on 12 three-pointers, gradually building a cushion that reached as many as 24 points.
The Sharks finished the night shooting 49.1 percent overall and knocked down 10 three-pointers. HPU also received solid contributions from its bench, which outscored Westmont's reserves 15–12.
Despite the setback, the Sharks displayed resilience and offensive balance against a conference opponent, remaining tied with Westmont in the PacWest standings as league play continues.
The Sharks will return to play this Saturday, January 24th at 6:30 p.m. against Concordia for the 14th annual Kam's Helmets Night. One of the most treasured traditions in HPU Athletics, we honor the life and legacy of former HPU Shark Kameron Steinhoff. Kam was a beloved member of our 'ohana whose life was tragically cut short in 2011, and this night continues his legacy by promoting helmet safety and protecting our community's keiki and students.
Thanks to the continued generosity of Leavitt, Yamane & Soldner, free bicycle helmets for keiki and moped helmets for HPU students will be available. This event is a reminder that one small action—wearing a helmet—can save a life.
Join us in the Shark Tank as we play with purpose, remember Kam, and continue a tradition that has already helped keep thousands safer.
