KAILUA, Hawaiʻi — The Hawaiʻi Pacific women's tennis team earned a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Dominican on Monday at the Kailua Racquet Club, using a strong doubles showing and decisive straight-set singles wins to secure the match.
Hawaii Pacific (3-2) claimed the doubles point with convincing performances on the top two courts.
Evi Roobol and
Annika Hakovirta blanked Sofia Acuna and Kaylee Lopez, 6-0, at No. 1 doubles, while
Tereza Noah and Willow Dymokowski matched that effort with a 6-0 win at No. 2, securing the double decision in exquisit fashion.
Dominican fought back with a win at No. 3, where Maria Gavrilov defeated
Kayleigh Castillo 6-0, 6-3 in the first finish of singles. However, the Sharks' momentum carried across the other courts. Roobol rolled to a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Acuna at No. 1 singles, and Noah cruised past Deepa Vanaraja, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 2 to extend the lead.
Rosa Viller Moeller added another point for HPU with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 5, giving the Sharks three straight-set singles victories to clinch the match.
The Penguins continued to fight, taking two tightly contested three-set matches at No. 4 and No. 6.
The Sharks will return to action next Saturday in Kona as the Sharks take on Azusa Pacific at 10 a.m.
