HILO, Hawai'i — The Hawai'i Pacific women's tennis team earned a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Hawai'i Hilo on Saturday morning at the UHH Tennis Courts, showcasing depth and resilience in a tightly contested match.
The Sharks (5-2) secured the crucial doubles point and added three singles victories to edge the Vulcans (1-3) in a match that came down to the final courts.
Hawai'i Pacific set the tone early by claiming two of three doubles matches. The duo of
Annika Hakovirta and
Evi Roobol rolled to a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles, while
Tereza Noah and
Willow Dymkowski followed with a 7-5 victory at No. 2 to clinch the point. Hawai'i Hilo picked up the No. 3 doubles match, but HPU carried a 1-0 lead into singles play.
In singles, the Sharks displayed strong form across the middle of the lineup. Noah dominated at No. 2 singles with a 6-0, 6-1 victory, and
Kayleigh Castillo matched that effort at No. 3 with a 6-0, 6-1 win. Dymkowski added the decisive point at No. 5 singles, defeating Marie Cordonnier 6-2, 6-1 to secure the team victory.
Hawai'i Hilo claimed wins at No. 1, No. 4, and No. 6 singles, including a three-set battle at No. 4, but the Sharks' early doubles success and commanding straight-set wins proved to be the difference.
With the victory, Hawai'i Pacific continues their four-match win streak.
Next up for the Sharks is Texas A&M - Kingsville in San Antonio on March 4th.
